Inside an Artistically Reimagined Beacon Hill Brownstone
Lisa Tharp's design firm often undertakes renovation projects, but for a specific residence on Beacon Hill, the team encountered a property that had already undergone a thoughtful gut renovation in 1900. This pre-existing modernization aligned well with the new homeowner's design preferences. The client desired a calm, relaxing interior with a minimalist sophistication, integrating existing cherished pieces while creating a fresh aesthetic. Crucially, the interior design needed to complement her extensive collection of modernist and contemporary art.
The residence's curved bow windows offer panoramic views from the state capitol to Back Bay, a feature the client particularly admired. Tharp and her team drew inspiration from the rich wood tones in the library and subtle violet hues present in artworks by Alex Katz and Sol LeWitt to establish a soft and nuanced color palette throughout the home. Tharp also provided expert consultation on potential new art acquisitions, ensuring that any additions would seamlessly integrate with the existing collection and enhance the overall artistic coherence of the space. This collaborative approach underlined the significant role art played in unifying the design elements.
The selection of furniture was heavily influenced by the client's collector's sensibility, with each piece chosen for its sculptural quality to harmoniously interact with the artwork displayed. This approach created an environment reminiscent of an art gallery, where furniture and art engage in a continuous dialogue. The design deliberately incorporated a blend of historical eras and influences, such as 1930s French art deco dining chairs and a contemporary settee paired with a vintage floor lamp beneath a Picasso in the library. This eclectic mix was intended to imbue the home with a sense of history, character, and timelessness, making it feel lived-in and deeply personal.
To ensure the home immediately felt familiar, some of the client's personal belongings were incorporated into the new design. Rugs were resized to fit their new spaces, and a beloved patterned velvet from a chaise lounge was repurposed to adorn the library's window seat. A significant challenge arose with an oversized sectional from the client's previous residence, which was too large for the living room and obstructed adjoining areas. Tharp's team ingeniously relocated the sectional to the family room, reconfigured and reupholstered it, transforming it into a modular seating arrangement. This creative solution allowed the client to retain her comfortable, cherished piece while achieving a more open and elegant layout in the formal living room.
Tharp's ability to address such design challenges, including the bold decision to modify a client's treasured possession, stemmed from the strong trust she had built with the homeowner. The client, described as an accomplished woman with a warm and flexible yet refined personality, shared Tharp's appreciation for good design and magnificent art. The interior design successfully mirrored the client's identity, reflecting her support for the arts and her discerning taste. Even the client's French poodle, often found lounging on the curved living room sofas by French designer Jean-Louis Deniot, seemed to appreciate the exquisite design. The project’s success is attributed to the synergistic relationship between the designer and the homeowner, resulting in a residence that is both aesthetically pleasing and deeply personal.
