The PAPER House / VIASCAPE design
The PAPER House is a community facility located in Dongbo yuan, a residential complex within the Hudong Sub-district. This project represents an experimental approach by VIASCAPE design in urban regeneration, focusing on integrating design regulations with site constraints through extensive public participation. The initiative aims to blend spatial installations and design concepts into the daily lives of residents, while also exploring methods to combine formal and informal construction for broader community benefits. The project is situated in Pudong, China, and was completed in 2023, covering an area of 21 square meters.
VIASCAPE design, led by Sun Yijia, developed The PAPER House with a team including Ma Li, Ji Wenshan, Gu Qinyi, Zhang Liang, Chen Lu, and Ji Yuwei. The design was finalized in October 2023. Key materials used in the construction include steel sheets and terracotta bricks. The project involved several professional entities, with Shanghai Shefapuzhong Construction Managing Co., Ltd. handling project management, and Shanghai Dongrong Construction Engineering Co., Ltd. serving as the contractor. OUI Light, with Xu Yuefeng as the lead lighting consultant, provided lighting expertise.
The client for The PAPER House was the Hudongxincun Sub-district Office, Pudong New Area, Shanghai, indicating a strong community-oriented objective. The design firm, VIASCAPE design, also managed the visual identity (Vi Design) for the project. The building is part of a larger effort to address urban regeneration challenges in the Hudong Sub-district, seeking innovative solutions that involve local residents in the design process. This approach is intended to ensure that the architectural interventions are relevant and beneficial to the community.
The small footprint of 21 square meters for the community house suggests an emphasis on efficient use of space and targeted functionality, potentially catering to specific community needs such as gathering spaces, small workshops, or recreational areas. The choice of materials like steel sheets and terracotta bricks might reflect a balance between modern aesthetics, durability, and a connection to local architectural traditions or environmental considerations. The collaborative nature of the project, involving various consultants and contractors, highlights a comprehensive approach to urban development.
The PAPER House is presented as a case study within VIASCAPE's broader portfolio of urban regeneration projects, distinguished by its experimental methodology and focus on public engagement. The design process sought to achieve a harmonious integration of new structures within an existing residential environment, prioritizing the social and functional aspects of community living. The detailed attribution to various team members and consultants underscores the interdisciplinary effort required for such an undertaking in contemporary architecture and urban design.
