Ege Carpets Launches a Flooring Collection Fabricated from the Ocean’s Abandoned Nets
Ege Carpets, a Danish company, has introduced "Transition," a new flooring collection that addresses the environmental issue of ocean waste, specifically abandoned fishing nets. Fishing nets constitute a significant portion—approximately one-tenth—of marine debris, prompting Ege Carpets to develop a sustainable solution. The "Transition" collection utilizes Econyl yarn, a material derived from these discarded fishing nets, to form its loop pile carpets.
The design of the "Transition" collection, a winner in the Modular Carpet category, was conceived by Manganèse Éditions, the product arm of Saguez & Partners. The collection draws inspiration from the natural process of iterative renewal, evoking imagery reminiscent of forest floors. This inspiration is manifested in the diverse patterns and textures of the carpets, which include: "Seed," characterized by a dotted appearance; "Leaf," featuring multiple tonal variations; "Fibre," displaying a mottled effect; and "Mix," which incorporates an ombré fade where two or more colors blend seamlessly.
Beyond the innovative use of recycled fishing nets for the yarn, the "Transition" collection also incorporates sustainable practices in its backing. Instead of traditional rubber, the felt backing of these carpets is made from recycled plastic bottles, further reducing the environmental footprint of the product. The collection is available in a variety of earthy color palettes, designed not only for aesthetic appeal but also for functional purposes.
These diverse color options allow for subtle delineation of spaces within an interior environment. This feature is particularly useful for defining different zones in open-plan areas or for guiding movement through a space, effectively serving as a wayfinding tool. By combining sustainable materials with thoughtful design and practical application, the "Transition" collection by Ege Carpets offers an environmentally conscious and aesthetically pleasing flooring solution.
