7 Design Mistakes Interior Designers Always Notice
This blog post outlines seven common design mistakes that interior designers consistently observe in homes, emphasizing how these errors can detract from a space's aesthetic and functionality. It draws on insights from several professional interior designers to provide specific examples and practical advice for improvement.
One significant mistake highlighted is inadequate or poorly chosen lighting. Kathy Kuo, an interior designer and CEO of Kathy Kuo Home, notes that lighting is often undervalued, being perceived as merely practical rather than a critical design element. Many homes retain outdated or inappropriate fixtures, such as the ubiquitous "boob lamp," which can diminish the overall design intent. Peter Yera, Director of Design and Development at Fine Art Handcrafted Lighting, stresses the importance of feature lighting and its interaction with other design elements like wallpaper, furniture, and flooring to create a cohesive look.
Another frequent oversight concerns window treatments. Jessica Nicastro, founder of Jessica Nicastro Design, points out that incorrect proportions or improper mounting of window treatments can instantly cheapen a home's appearance. Jennifer Sissom, Lead Interior Designer at Ryan Street Architects, advises that drapery should extend generously beyond the window frame and lightly touch the floor to enhance the architecture and light framing. Improperly sized or mounted window treatments can disrupt visual rhythm, making a room feel smaller or unbalanced.
Art placement is also a common area where mistakes are made. Andrea Goldman, founder and Principal of Andrea Goldman Design, observes that artwork hung at the wrong height can make a space feel disconnected or crowded. Even slightly crooked art catches a designer's eye, underscoring the importance of precise placement to ensure visual harmony with furniture and the room's overall layout.
Rug sizing is another critical element often misjudged by homeowners. Goldman explains that a rug too small for a room can make the space feel disproportionate, likening it to a "postage stamp" effect where furniture appears to be falling off its edges. She advocates for larger rugs that adequately anchor the furniture and define the area.
Scale, specifically the size of furniture relative to the room, is crucial. Andrea DeRosa, co-founder and CEO of Avenue Interior Design, highlights that oversized furniture in a small space hinders circulation and makes the room feel cramped, while undersized furniture in a large space can create an unfinished or uneasy feeling. She suggests that for collectors, a "one in, one out" rule for accessories like throw pillows can help maintain appropriate scale.
Furthermore, furniture arrangement is frequently overlooked as a dynamic design tool. DeRosa encourages homeowners to experiment with furniture placement to transform a space, emphasizing that the initial arrangement doesn't have to be permanent. She notes that designers often identify underutilized views or opportunities to arrange seating for better social interaction, and small adjustments, such as centering a dining table with a window, can significantly enhance balance and harmony.
Finally, the absence of personal touches can make a home feel like an impersonal showroom. Arvid Lithander, Creative Director and co-founder of Wild Palace wallpaper, observes that spaces lacking personality can appear bland. He advocates for incorporating bold and unexpected elements, such as striking wallpaper in a small powder room or a playful print in a laundry room, to infuse a home with character and make it memorable. These personal expressions, even if they involve taking risks, are what ultimately make a home unique and unforgettable.
