How to fix your dated orange wood cabinets and floors—even if you rent

Dated orange-toned woodwork, common in homes built in the 1980s, often presents a challenge for homeowners and renters due to its glaring appearance and the high cost of replacement. However, there are several easy and affordable methods to update these surfaces, even for renters, with landlord permission. The orange hue typically results from red oak wood combined with polyurethane coatings that yellow over time, a common practice until around 1990. Despite a current trend towards natural wood types like white oak, birch, maple, and walnut, orange wood remains unpopular. One effective solution is to mask the orange with a new wood stain. Interior wood stains come in various shades, allowing for the concealment or balancing of the orange tint. This process typically requires sanding down any existing protective coating, though uncoated wood might only need light scuffing. Water-based stains are recommended for their low VOCs and environmental benefits. Experts suggest testing stains in discreet areas, as adding gray or white tints can help but might result in a pinkish tone. Products like Bona Natural or Rubio Monocoat can offer a more neutral finish. For floors made of red oak, Bona Red Out is specifically designed to counteract red tones. Achieving a white-oak look usually involves sanding and stripping the floors, then white-washing them with a white-tinted sealer such as Pall-X Whiteseal or Bona NordicSeal. It's advisable to avoid polyurethane topcoats, as they can reintroduce a yellow/orange tinge; matte finishes are currently preferred. If a lighter look isn't achievable, opting for darker stains like medium brown, walnut, or ebony can be effective, with walnut being a popular choice. Another approach involves balancing out the orange tones using special wood toners and stain dyes in cool colors like blue or green. These products do not require stripping the wood. For coated wood, a transparent aerosol toner with a blue or green tint, such as those from Mohawk, can be sprayed on. For uncoated wood, a stain dye with a similar tint from brands like General Finishes can be used. Blue tints offer a more dramatic change than green, and both methods will result in a darker brown shade. If other methods are unsuitable, painting the wood offers a foolproof solution. Boutique brands like Annie Sloan, Amy Howard, and All-in-One Paint are popular for DIY projects, while standard interior paints from major companies can also be used, with floor/deck paint for floors. Painting orange floors white can significantly freshen a space, especially for staging a property for sale. Similarly, painting outdated cabinets, even those made of quality wood like dark mahogany or red oak, with white lacquer paint or cool colors like Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter, can modernize a kitchen. Painting offers a cost-effective alternative to ripping out and replacing millwork. For renters, seeking landlord permission for alterations is crucial. If direct alterations are not possible, strategic interior design can help. Using lighting with a blue undertone can subtly shade orange areas, while warm (yellow) bulbs should be avoided as they enhance orange. Instead of using blue decor, which can make orange wood stand out more, a neutral palette with warm, creamy whites is recommended. Alternatively, one can embrace the 1980s aesthetic by incorporating similar shades, such as rust-colored furniture, to make the orange wood appear intentional and part of a cohesive design. Ultimately, the choice of method depends on budget and desired aesthetic, with various options available to improve the appearance of dated orange woodwork. #WoodworkRenovation #OrangeWood #WoodStains #InteriorDesign #DIYHomeImprovement #RentalPropertyUpdates #CabinetRefinishing #FloorRefinishing #HomeImprovementTips #WoodworkRenovation #OrangeWood #WoodStains #InteriorDesign #DIYHomeImprovement #RentalPropertyUpdates #CabinetRefinishing #FloorRefinishing #HomeImprovementTips
