SwitchBot Curtain Rod 2 review: This smart curtain controller gets a streamlined design

The SwitchBot Curtain Rod 2 is a second-generation smart curtain controller that improves upon its predecessor's design and functionality while maintaining the same $99 price point for a single device. The original SwitchBot Curtain was a commendable initial effort at automating curtain operation, but the company identified areas for improvement, leading to the enhanced Curtain Rod 2. Physically, the Curtain Rod 2 retains a similar chunky, oblong appearance to the original, featuring two smaller pieces that attach to its motor. However, a significant design upgrade is the transition from a clip-on mechanism, which sandwiched the curtain rod between the motor and a plastic piece, to a self-contained system. The new version incorporates more convenient and aesthetically refined spring-loaded clips that securely grip the rod like wheeled claws. This spring mechanism is quite tight, making attachment to thicker curtain rods (which the device supports for diameters between 15 and 40mm) a slight challenge, but not overly difficult. It is important to note that the Curtain Rod 2 is specifically designed for conventional round curtain rods. Users with I Rail or U Rail tracks will need to purchase a different product. For curtains with tabs, small plastic clips must be installed to provide a surface for the motor to push against. Grommet-style curtains can utilize an included string of beads with clips, though this adds a layer of installation complexity. The SwitchBot Curtain 2 operates primarily via Bluetooth, ensuring a quick setup process. To extend its functionality and enable remote control via Wi-Fi, users can integrate it with a SwitchBot Hub Mini, priced at $39. The hub also facilitates compatibility with various smart home ecosystems, including Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri shortcuts, and IFTTT. Without the hub, control is limited to local smartphone operation. The device is robust, weighing over a pound, and is equipped with a battery rechargeable via a USB-C cable (included). While the manufacturer does not specify battery lifespan, an optional $19 solar panel is available to continuously replenish the battery. Installation is streamlined, requiring a brief calibration through the SwitchBot app to define the curtain's open and closed positions. The app offers intuitive manual controls for opening, closing, or pausing curtains, along with granular options for partial operation, delayed timers, and recurring schedules. A notable feature is the light-sensing capability, which allows for automated curtain adjustments based on ambient light levels. This feature is currently in beta but performs surprisingly well. Users can select between two operating modes: Performance Mode and Silent Mode. Performance Mode provides more motor power, which is beneficial for heavier drapes, and the motor's motion in this mode feels smoother and more confident than the original model, despite both generations claiming a maximum curtain weight support of 17 pounds. Silent Mode, while quieter, reduces motor power and may struggle with heavy drapes, potentially causing the device to halt mid-operation. Despite these improvements, the second-generation device does not resolve all issues present in the original. For instance, if mini blinds are situated directly beneath the curtains, the unit may interfere with them during movement. Furthermore, the industrial design of the SwitchBot may remain visible with certain curtain styles that do not offer adequate concealment. Nevertheless, the SwitchBot Curtain, particularly with this updated Rod 2 version, significantly enhances the convenience of automating curtain operations, making it a valuable addition for smart home users. #SmartHome #CurtainAutomation #SwitchBot #HomeTechnology #ProductReview #SmartGadget #HomeAutomation #BluetoothConnectivity #SmartHome #CurtainAutomation #SwitchBot #HomeTechnology #ProductReview #SmartGadget #HomeAutomation #BluetoothConnectivity
