‘You’re missing a trick' – 5 ways experts make that empty space in your upstairs hallway look beautiful

While entry hallways are often well-sorted for both aesthetics and practicality, upstairs hallways frequently become overlooked, empty spaces. These areas, typically found between room doors and staircases, often lack a clear design aesthetic or function. However, unlike entryways that require functional considerations for daily comings and goings, upstairs hallways offer a unique opportunity for creative expression without strict functional demands beyond providing passage. This freedom allows homeowners to transform these often-neglected spaces into beautiful design moments. Design experts offer five distinct strategies for maximizing the potential of an upstairs hallway. For smaller areas, displaying art and photographs is highly recommended. Bethany Adams, Principal Designer at Bethany Adams Interiors, suggests using these compact spaces to group family photos, creating a natural pause point for admiration. Ami Mckay, President and Principal Interior Designer of Pure Design, adds that if space permits, oversized art or sculptural pieces can introduce dimension. The emphasis here is on personal style and creating a joyful display, whether it's cherished family memories, favorite artworks, or travel souvenirs, primarily for the enjoyment of the home's occupants. When a larger surface area is available, incorporating a seating area becomes a viable option. Ami Mckay highlights that an interesting chair or bench can effectively fill the space and provide a visual focal point. This allows for the integration of accent furniture, throw blankets, or pillows, transforming a previously empty corner into a restful and aesthetically pleasing feature. The idea can be expanded further by adding a shelf or small bookcase to establish a dedicated reading nook. Creating a reading nook doesn't necessarily require extensive space. A comfortable chair, a bookshelf, and a light source can suffice. Adams suggests that on larger landings, an upholstered bench or two comfortable chairs can carve out a cozy reading area. The concept of a full bookshelf on a landing is also proposed as a clever use of space, offering both visual impact and functionality. Bespoke fitted joinery, shallow enough for books, can maximize wall space without encroaching too much into the hallway. Statement wall treatments are another powerful way to revitalize an upstairs landing. These more private and intimate areas allow for bolder design choices than main living spaces. Ami McKay encourages experimenting with textured walls, such as lime wash, stone, and wood paneling. Incorporating wall lighting, like statement sconces or art lights, can further enhance the visual appeal and highlight artwork. Wallpapering, especially with easy-to-apply peel-and-stick options, offers a simple yet impactful method to introduce patterns and interest, allowing for creative experimentation and easy changes. Finally, styling a console table against the wall is an effective solution for narrow upstairs hallways, mirroring its utility in entryways. Ashley Macuga, Principal Designer at Collected Interiors, emphasizes that a narrow console and mirror can add to the aesthetic while also serving a function. A mirror not only provides a design element but also helps reflect light, making the often less naturally lit upstairs hallway appear brighter and more spacious. Alternatively, an artwork or a large floral display can be used to adorn the console table. The overarching advice for all these suggestions is to embrace creativity and view the upstairs hallway as a bonus space for personal expression without stringent functional limitations. #UpstairsHallway #HallwayDesign #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #SmallSpaceIdeas #ReadingNook #WallTreatments #ConsoleTableStyling #HomeImprovement #UpstairsHallway #HallwayDesign #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #SmallSpaceIdeas #ReadingNook #WallTreatments #ConsoleTableStyling #HomeImprovement
