Designer Tips To Refresh Your Entryway Or Mudroom
First impressions are crucial, and in a home, the entryway sets the tone. This article offers several designer tips to refresh and redesign entryways and mudrooms, spaces that are increasingly valued for their functionality and aesthetic appeal. Traditional formal entryways are evolving, with a greater emphasis now placed on practical yet beautiful informal areas, particularly mudrooms. Christopher Peacock notes that specific storage solutions for items like shoes, sports equipment, outerwear, backpacks, and packages have become standard, and space for online shopping deliveries is now a requirement. This has led to larger mudrooms with better flooring, lighting, and surface areas, reflecting a willingness to invest significantly in these spaces.
One of the simplest ways to refresh an entryway is by adding texture. Interior designer Alexis Rodgers suggests replacing uninspired or recessed lighting with a more distinctive fixture, opting for flush or semi-flush mounts if ceiling height is an issue. She also advises against keeping welcome mats indoors, instead recommending a stylish indoor area rug to define and elevate the space, making it feel as important as adjacent rooms, even if it requires occasional cleaning. Alternatively, a beautiful antique rug floated slightly beyond the front door can create a welcoming and defined aesthetic.
Storage is another key element for a functional entryway. Design influencer Paige Rangel collaborated with Wayfair to transform a wasted mudroom space into an efficient area by incorporating a shelf, hooks, a bench, and storage baskets, demonstrating that significant improvements don't always require a large budget or extensive effort. Accessories can also greatly enhance the feeling of a space; a coat rack can organize a small area and free up closet space, while small tables or nesting tables can be used to display picture frames or plants.
Working with existing features is also highlighted. Melissa Michaels of The Inspired Room revamped her entryway by keeping built-in storage but modifying it. She removed dated sliding doors to expose shelves, which she then styled with decorative bowls, books, and storage baskets. Michaels also changed hardware, such as doorknobs, light switch plates, and cabinet pulls, an inexpensive and quick update that can modernize a space.
Flooring choice is a practical consideration for entryways, which endure significant dirt and wear, especially in homes with children and pets. Nancy Epstein of Artistic Tile recommends ceramic or porcelain tile due to their durability, ease of maintenance, stain resistance, and scrub-ability. While wood flooring is aesthetically pleasing, wood-look tiles offer a practical, easier-to-clean, and often more budget-friendly alternative.
Interior designer Laurence Carr introduces the ancient principles of Wabi-sabi for entryway design, emphasizing the acceptance of transience and imperfection. Wabi-sabi promotes minimalism and simplicity, aligning with the idea of entryways as transitional spaces where movement flows. Wallpaper offers another opportunity for impactful design, allowing for bold choices in color and pattern, such as vibrant jungle vegetation on walls and ceilings. Peel-and-stick wallpaper, as offered by brands like Tempaper, provides an affordable and easily installable option for both renters and homeowners.
Finally, creating a gallery wall is an effective way to personalize and refresh an entryway. ArtSugar founder Alix Greenberg suggests mixing and matching framed prints of various styles and sizes to express unique personal style. ArtSugar provides tools for designing gallery walls and offers art rentals, allowing for regular updates and creative flexibility.
