These Are the First Things Designers Will Always Notice in Your Entryway

The entryway serves as the crucial opening act for any home, setting the tone for the entire interior design. Designers emphasize the importance of this space, not just as a transitional area but as an opportunity to showcase personality and style. Victoria Holly, Principal and Founder of Victoria Holly Interiors, highlights that an entryway should be thoughtfully crafted with striking elements rather than being overlooked. Peak Petersen, Lead Designer at Hoedemaker Pfeiffer, echoes this sentiment, viewing the entryway as a prime location to express the inhabitants' personal style and make a lasting first impression on guests. Several key elements consistently draw the attention of design professionals. One significant aspect designers notice is visible clutter. Erin Chelius, Principal Designer and Owner of Chelius House of Design, points out that items like keys and mail accumulating on a console table can negatively impact the initial impression of the home. She suggests incorporating decorative boxes or bowls to maintain organization and visual appeal, preventing the entryway from appearing disorganized and setting a chaotic tone. Thoughtful accent pieces are also highly valued by designers. Petersen suggests an interesting piece of art placed above a console table provides both aesthetic value and a practical spot for small items. If space permits, an indoor tree, particularly a leggy, asymmetrical one like a Song of India, can introduce an organic and casual element, adding life and softness to the entryway's decor. Proper lighting is another critical detail. Holly stresses the importance of accent lighting, advocating for flush mount or pendant lights over recessed lighting. She explains that a statement light fixture can dramatically elevate the ambiance, offering an unexpected and welcoming glow that enhances the overall aesthetic. This choice not only provides necessary illumination but also serves as a focal point, contributing to the entryway's dramatic impact. Designers also frequently observe poorly thought-out storage solutions. Holly notes that many homeowners opt for storage benches for shoes, which often become underutilized, leading to shoes simply gathering around them. She recommends loose baskets as a more flexible and practical alternative. Baskets can accommodate various shoe sizes, are easily accessible, and encourage more frequent tidying, making them a more effective storage solution that helps maintain a neat appearance. Finally, a mirror is considered an essential element for an entryway. Holly highlights its dual functionality: it allows for a quick check before leaving the house and helps to visually expand the space. She advises choosing a unique statement mirror with an asymmetrical shape or bold material and color, as it can add a distinctive pop to the entrance. By focusing on these specific design elements—minimizing clutter, incorporating thoughtful accents, ensuring proper lighting, optimizing storage, and adding a statement mirror—homeowners can create an entryway that leaves a positive and memorable impression, effectively setting the stage for the rest of their home's interiors. #EntrywayDesign #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #DesignTips #ClutterManagement #AccentLighting #StorageSolutions #DecorativeMirrors #HomeOrganization #EntrywayDesign #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #DesignTips #ClutterManagement #AccentLighting #StorageSolutions #DecorativeMirrors #HomeOrganization
