Long hallway ideas – 10 ways to make the most of your space

Hallways, particularly long ones, are often challenging spaces to design due to their practical role as the home's epicenter, multiple doorways, varied materials, and awkward shapes. However, with strategic design, a long hallway can be transformed into a functional and aesthetically pleasing area. Interior designer Camila de Oliveira Rodrigues suggests using wallcoverings and art to maximize usable space and creating horizontal or diagonal lines to enhance the sense of spaciousness. Simple solutions include striped rugs, while more comprehensive changes might involve wallpaper or feature paneling. There are numerous ways to make a long hallway welcoming and overcome its problematic nature. Design tricks can be adapted to suit narrow and long spaces, encompassing clever use of pattern and color, thoughtful flooring choices, and effective storage solutions. One key approach is to use color to visually manipulate perception. For instance, employing mid-to-pale shades on stairs can make them appear closer, and incorporating a large mirror or a cut-through section in a wall at the back of a staircase can bring in additional natural light and extend the view. Zoning is another effective strategy for long hallways. Dividing the length into distinct areas, such as a shoe storage section, a coat area, and a console table for essentials, can make the space feel less like a corridor. These zones can be enhanced with pockets of interest, such as vase displays on storage tops, a picture gallery on a wall section, or a textured rug. Bold colors can also be strategically used; a vibrant lampshade at one end can draw the eye away from the corridor effect, making the space feel wider. Good lighting from multiple sources is crucial, as hallways are often poorly lit. Patterned wallpapers, tiled floors, or stair carpets can also be utilized, with simple woodwork and wall colors (white or black) helping to isolate the different designs. For a consistent look, using the same wallpaper pattern on both lower and upper walls can guide the eye upwards, minimizing the perceived length of the hallway. In narrow long hallways, a monochrome scheme with luxurious touches like a velvet-pile carpet and shimmering metallics can be effective. Stairway runners can make stairs appear wider than wall-to-wall carpeting. Additionally, a runner can be used to create a distinct zone, such as a small desk area, and stopping it short of the full length can actually make the hallway seem shorter. Incorporating warm colors through runners and accessories can also add coziness. Long hallways offer an excellent opportunity for a gallery wall, featuring uniformly framed photos spaced down both sides. Extending the same flooring, such as herringbone wood, from the hallway into adjacent rooms creates a seamless flow. For cost-effective flooring, painting original floorboards with a diamond design can add width and break up the length, using hardwearing, non-slip paint that matches other elements like paneling and the front door. Flexible furniture pieces, like benches and tall plant stands, are practical for narrow spaces, allowing for easy movement. An unusual pendant light can also visually break up the hallway's length when viewed from a distance. Finally, ensuring furniture is proportionate to the hallway's length, such as a large console unit, provides valuable storage and display space while balancing the area. Walls in long hallways are ideal for bold artwork and canvases, which visually interrupt the length. A dark grey hallway idea can provide a chic backdrop for both furniture and art. The key is to decide whether to highlight the hallway's length or disguise it, creating moments of interest or leading the eye through. Light and airy decor, combined with patterned flooring or wallpaper, can make a long, narrow hallway feel bigger and more inviting. #HallwayDesign #InteriorDecor #HomeImprovement #SpaceSavingSolutions #ColorSchemes #LightingIdeas #PatternUse #FlooringOptions #FurniturePlacement #HallwayDesign #InteriorDecor #HomeImprovement #SpaceSavingSolutions #ColorSchemes #LightingIdeas #PatternUse #FlooringOptions #FurniturePlacement
