The Surprising Interior Design Trick That Can Make Your Floors Pop
Seasoned interior designer Ashley Clark, from sKout Interior Design, recently explored an innovative approach to flooring in her own Southern California home: painted wood floors. This technique, which Clark had admired for years but hesitated to implement in client projects due to concerns about scratching and maintenance, presented a unique opportunity during the construction of her new residence. She decided to apply this method in a separate bonus room, aiming for a low-maintenance and cost-effective flooring solution.
For her project, Clark selected unfinished oak flooring, which cost her $3 per square foot. To achieve the desired aesthetic, she chose "Simply White" floor paint from Benjamin Moore. The application process involved a professional painter who applied two coats of primer followed by two coats of paint over a two-day period. Clark notes that this project is also feasible for homeowners as a DIY endeavor, describing it as "super easy." She was particularly pleased with the outcome, highlighting that the paint allowed the natural grain and imperfections of the wood, as well as the seams and patterns of the floor, to remain visible, creating a perfect finish.
One of the most significant validations of this design choice came from its durability. Despite having a dog and three sons, the painted floors have shown no signs of scratches, a testament to their resilience. This positive experience has convinced Clark to offer painted floors as a viable option to her clients, emphasizing its potential to create a distinctive look while offering cost savings. Beyond new installations, Clark also advocates for painted floors as an excellent solution for upgrading existing flooring. She suggests that homeowners with original floors that have deteriorated or whose color is undesirable can completely transform their space by painting the floors any color or even incorporating patterns. This approach provides a fresh and renewed appearance without the need for extensive and costly floor replacement.
Clark's experience underscores the versatility and practical benefits of painted floors as an interior design trick. It offers an appealing combination of aesthetic transformation, cost-effectiveness, and unexpected durability, making it a compelling alternative to traditional flooring options. The ability to customize the color and even add patterns allows for significant personalization, enabling homeowners to create a truly unique environment. This design strategy serves as a practical and stylish method to revitalize a room, providing a modern update to any home's interior.
