How the Broadway Dressing Room Went from Dingy to Deluxe

Broadway dressing rooms, historically cramped and unglamorous, are undergoing a significant transformation, evolving into personalized and luxurious retreats for A-list stars. This shift is driven by a recent influx of celebrities to Broadway stages, leading to a demand for more comfortable and inspiring backstage environments. Interior decorators are now specializing in redesigning these small spaces, working with limited budgets to create spa-like sanctuaries. Devin Sparkles, an interior decorator, is one such professional known for transforming these modest rooms for celebrities like Nick Jonas, Eddie Redmayne, and Lea Michele. Similarly, Krysta Rodriguez, a Broadway actress and interior decorator, emphasizes the importance of these rooms as an actor’s “Midtown apartment,” recognizing the hours performers spend there to prepare for shows. Given the temporary nature of many Broadway productions, decorators operate with tight budgets, often around a thousand dollars for hundred-square-foot rooms. This necessitates a focus on thrifting and utilizing platforms like Facebook Marketplace rather than high-end options like Minotti. In some instances, producers fund these transformations to attract stars, while other celebrities personally invest to enhance their dressing rooms. Designer Mike Harrison, who began his career in dressing room design with Leslie Odom Jr. during his initial 'Hamilton' run, has since designed over a hundred such spaces. He notes a significant increase in dressing room makeovers across the Theater District. These redesigned rooms serve not only as places of rest but also as extensions of an actor's craft. Jonathan Groff, for example, had his dressing room for 'Just in Time' transformed to reflect his character, Bobby Darin, creating an atmosphere akin to a green room before a major performance. For Nick Jonas's dressing room in 'The Last Five Years,' Sparkles worked with a $2,300 budget to achieve a “California chic” and “gentlemanly” aesthetic. This involved incorporating a forest green sofa, a wooden mid-century accent chair, and personal touches like portraits of his family. Megan Hilty, starring in 'Death Becomes Her,' collaborated with Rodriguez to design a serene, spa-like space featuring a bouclé curved sofa, a textured-stone coffee table, soft-colored textiles, and decorative branches. Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child opted for a vibrant, purple-themed room for her role, aligning with her character’s aesthetic and personal preference. The accessibility of materials like peel-and-stick wallpaper and the ease of buying and selling furniture through platforms like Facebook Marketplace have made these temporary transformations more feasible. Despite quick turnaround times, sometimes as short as three days, these projects are highly rewarding for decorators. The positive impact on an actor's comfort and performance is a significant motivator, creating a ripple effect that enhances the overall theatrical experience. #Broadway #DressingRoomDesign #InteriorDecorating #CelebrityStyle #TheaterDistrict #HomeDecor #BudgetDecor #PersonalizedSpaces #Broadway #DressingRoomDesign #InteriorDecorating #CelebrityStyle #TheaterDistrict #HomeDecor #BudgetDecor #PersonalizedSpaces
