How a Seattle Bathroom Went from Deteriorating to Design Eye-Candy

The hall bathroom in a 1,500-square-foot Cape Cod-style house in Seattle was in a state of disrepair, with cracking tiles, deteriorating grout, and limited functionality. The space also suffered from minimal storage, an unnecessary existing tub, and inadequate lighting, making it feel dark and confined. Interior designer Jessica Dorling was tasked with transforming this outdated bathroom into a more functional, spacious, and stylish area without adding any extra square footage. The family, having recently spent a year abroad in England, desired a design aesthetic that combined European charm with natural elements. They sought a modern, clean, and thoughtfully designed bathroom that would align with the newly refined style of their remodeled four-bedroom home. Functionality and a timeless, elevated look were key objectives for the renovation. Working within the existing footprint, Jessica and her team completely gutted the bathroom and reimagined its layout. The original tub was removed and replaced with a walk-in shower, as a new full bathroom was being added upstairs. This strategic change allowed for better use of the limited space. Maximizing every inch was crucial, requiring precise measurements and careful navigation of building codes to ensure proper shower width, toilet clearance, and vanity placement. Balancing these technical requirements with the aesthetic goals demanded meticulous planning and attention to detail throughout the project. To address the lack of storage, a vanity with ample space and a recessed medicine cabinet equipped with built-in outlets were installed. The poor lighting was improved by adding layered fixtures and incorporating a larger window to introduce more natural light, making the space feel brighter and more open. Beyond functionality, the design incorporated bold tile choices. The client's enthusiasm for a particular patterned wall tile served as the inspiration for the rest of the design, with geometric floor tiles introduced to provide a playful yet sophisticated contrast that energized the small room without overwhelming it. The redesigned bathroom has been met with positive reception from the owners, who particularly appreciate the unique tile selections. Despite retaining the original square footage, the beauty and functionality of the space have significantly improved. The unique tile floor, combined with complementary and easily maintainable wall tiles, created a visually striking and practical outcome. The main floor bathroom now feels like a natural extension of their newly renovated home, perfectly suited to their needs with a thoughtful and stylish design. #BathroomRemodel #InteriorDesign #SeattleHome #HomeRenovation #SmallSpaceDesign #BeforeAndAfter #TileDesign #FunctionalDesign #BathroomRemodel #InteriorDesign #SeattleHome #HomeRenovation #SmallSpaceDesign #BeforeAndAfter #TileDesign #FunctionalDesign
