The designer totally transformed this kitchen with an unexpected color combination and a controversial decorating technique
The article details a kitchen remodel by designer Lizzie Green, transforming a once dark and cramped London kitchen into a bright, spacious, and personality-filled space. Initially, the kitchen was an "awkward middle room" with limited space, which necessitated significant structural changes. A key alteration involved removing a wall between the hallway and the reception room, as well as widening openings to the back garden, to enhance natural light and create a more open-plan feel. A reeded glass window, sourced from Retrovius, was strategically incorporated into the rebuilt wall between the front door and living room, preventing a direct view into the kitchen from the entrance.
The design embraces a bold and colorful aesthetic, moving away from neutral, pared-back schemes. The kitchen features sky blue cabinets complemented by soft pink walls, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The choice of strongly veined Arabescato Viola marble for countertops and backsplash adds a luxurious touch and visually connects with the blue cabinetry. Green emphasizes that color evokes comfort and positive associations, drawing parallels to summer days and natural landscapes.
The remodel also focused on enhancing functionality and livability. By expanding the footprint, the kitchen now accommodates a dedicated dining nook, which was crucial for the family's hosting needs and young child. The dining area integrates seamlessly with the kitchen's color scheme, utilizing heavily floral curtains as inspiration for recovering chunky pine dining chairs in a performance material from Perennials. This attention to detail ensures a cohesive and comfortable living space.
Decorative elements play a significant role in bringing personality to the kitchen. Countertops and shelving are adorned with bold and chunky resin pieces from Dinosaur Designs, chosen for their prehistoric shapes and vibrant colors. The dining nook continues this decorative theme with a vintage wooden sideboard, a botanical painting, and an oversized lamp with a striped shade. The designer also employed a "mixed metals" technique, combining brass kitchen cabinet hardware with a chrome faucet. While often considered controversial, this approach is executed tastefully, allowing the colorful decor to remain the focal point without visual distraction.
Overall, the project exemplifies how a strategic combination of structural changes, bold color choices, and thoughtful decoration can transform an outdated space into a timeless and character-filled kitchen. It highlights that a colorful kitchen can be both vibrant and classic, encouraging readers to experiment with color to create a personalized and inviting home environment.
