10 bathrooms that nail the natural wood trend in surprisingly different ways
Wood, a material celebrated for its tranquil and natural qualities, is gaining traction in bathroom design. While often perceived as challenging due to moisture, proper specification, protection, and sealing allow wood to introduce a soothing and homely aesthetic to these spaces. Victoria Sass, principal and direct designer of Project Refuge Studio, highlights wood's warmth, sound-absorbing properties, and durability, making it a valuable addition to bathrooms. The integration of wood can range from simple decorative elements like framed art to more extensive applications such as vanities and paneling.
One of the most impactful ways to incorporate wood is through the bathroom vanity. These central pieces not only house sinks and offer essential storage but also provide a crucial surface for decor. Solid wood vanities are increasingly popular for their strength, durability, and aesthetic appeal, though sealing and varnishing are critical for longevity. Additionally, wood can introduce fluted textures, a trend that evokes Art Deco glamor and adds tactile interest to vanities. This decorative technique can create an impression of lightness and delicacy, especially when combined with natural materials like marble, fostering a luxurious atmosphere.
Wood paneling offers another avenue for integrating this natural material, extending beyond walls to ceilings for a rustic or spa-like ambiance. This approach not only provides a luxurious feel, reminiscent of a sauna, but also offers protection to walls and ceilings, unlike paint which can discolor, or tiles which can feel cold. Cedar, for instance, brings a sense of calm and warmth and even a pleasant aroma. For practical reasons, moisture-resistant MDF or other sheet materials can mimic the look of hardwood paneling without the expansion and contraction issues associated with natural wood, provided they are properly sealed.
Smaller, decorative touches also play a significant role. A wooden-framed mirror can introduce warmth to even the starkest bathroom designs. Project Refuge Studio, for example, incorporated a wooden mirror to complement the natural surroundings of a Minneapolis home, echoing existing fir doors and trim and creating a "scandi-camp sauna energy." Thoughtful selection of wooden accessories, such as solid teak knobs, can further personalize the space.
While solid wood flooring offers a luxurious look, especially when paired with freestanding baths, its application requires careful consideration due to moisture. Ensuring the flooring is well-finished and sealed, combined with excellent bathroom ventilation, is crucial to prevent damage from splashes, steam, and humidity. Alternatively, wood can be introduced through functional and beautiful shelving. Freestanding wooden shelves or shelving units with wooden surfaces add a subtle warmth and natural feel without requiring extensive renovation. Paul Porjazoski of BENT Architecture notes that even small doses of wood add softness and warmth to interiors.
Wood also serves as an effective design element for breaking up monochromatic or stark bathrooms, functioning as both a material and a color. Its rich, natural tones can soften cold palettes, as seen with American White Oak veneer used over an EO MR MDF substrate. For those seeking a sense of history, reclaimed wood furniture, such as a vanity crafted from a vintage chest or salvaged wood, introduces a unique patina and rustic charm. Interior designer Sarah Solis emphasizes how repurposed wood can make a space distinctive and characterful.
Beyond larger elements, wood can be incorporated into smaller architectural details, such as bathroom niches. A white oak niche, for instance, adds warmth and an unexpected touch, offering an alternative to traditional tile niches, though its placement should be considered based on direct water exposure. Finally, wooden shutters provide a practical and aesthetically pleasing alternative to fabric curtains or clinical blinds, bringing warmth and personality to a bathroom. They can recreate a vintage or elegant salon atmosphere, as demonstrated by JT GRUPA in a Warsaw apartment, contributing to a cozy, spa-like mood with delicate paneling and soft edges.
