How to Paint Wood Paneling and Its Best Friend, the Trim
Painting wood paneling and trim can seem daunting compared to painting a smooth wall, but with a few extra steps, the process can be straightforward and yield a neat, even finish. This guide outlines the necessary materials and a four-step preparation and three-step painting process for achieving professional-looking results.
To begin, gather essential supplies such as a drop cloth, plastic tarp, sandpaper, a hand sander, a quart of paint with primer (like Benjamin Moore Aura in satin or semigloss), paint trays, a paintbrush, small roller brushes with a handle, painter's tape, and optional wood filler. The preparation phase is crucial for a smooth and lasting finish. First, sand down large surface areas of the paneling using a hand sander, and for more intricate areas like trim, use regular sandpaper. After sanding, meticulously brush off any excess dust from the surfaces to ensure paint adhesion. If there are any holes or imperfections, fill them with wood filler and allow it to dry completely before sanding the patched areas smooth. Finally, apply painter's tape around any edges or adjacent surfaces that are not intended to be painted, creating clean lines and protecting surrounding areas.
Once the prep work is complete, the painting process can begin. Using a flat or angled brush, carefully "cut in" with paint along the intricate details, such as the trim and the grooves of the paneling. It is important not to overload the brush with paint to prevent drips and the need for additional sanding. Allow this initial coat to dry thoroughly. Next, use the roller brush to paint the flat portions of the paneling, ensuring even coverage, and let this coat dry. Repeat the cutting in and rolling steps until the surface is completely covered. Typically, two to three coats of paint are required to achieve full opacity and a consistent finish. The patience exercised during these steps will ultimately result in a beautifully painted wood paneling and trim, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the room.
