How to Paint Wood-Paneling
This article details the dramatic transformation of a wood-paneled living room into a bright, airy, and stunning space through a do-it-yourself makeover. Angela Roark-Szazynski from Noblesville, Indiana, motivated by a desire to create a calming atmosphere for her mother, undertook the project. Leveraging her and her husband Tim's experience from their handyman business, they focused on painting over the existing dark wood paneling.
The renovation process began with preparing the wood paneling by washing, caulking, and puttying any imperfections. They then applied two coats of gripper primer, followed by two coats of paint: 'Jekyll Green' by Behr for the walls and 'Dove White' by Valspar for the trim. The cost for the primer was approximately $25, and the paint was around $35, demonstrating a cost-effective approach to a significant change.
Beyond just painting, the couple enhanced the room's architectural details. They utilized a shoe mold to extend the existing small crown molding down by nine inches, a technique employed due to the room's high ceilings. Additionally, they installed new trim around the doors and the fireplace, further refining the space. The total expenditure for all the new moldings amounted to approximately $450.
In addition to the structural and aesthetic changes, the furniture in the room was also updated, contributing to the overall transformed feel of the living space. Angela Roark-Szazynski expressed that the effort and financial investment were entirely worthwhile, as it resulted in a beautiful sanctuary for her mother. The article emphasizes that a fresh coat of paint can be a game-changer for homes with outdated wood paneling or cabinets, suggesting that such simple updates can yield remarkable results.
