How They Pulled It Off: A Terrace House Gets a Sustainable Glow-Up—With Help From Its Homeowners
James Morton, a runner-up on "The Great British Bake Off" in 2012, and his wife, Fenella Barlow-Pay, embarked on a significant renovation of their Edwardian-era terrace house south of Scotland’s River Clyde. They acquired the property in December 2021, noting it had not been updated since the 1970s. Despite their limited renovation experience, which included James's six-month stint as a builder's apprentice 15 years prior, they initially intended to undertake much of the work themselves, with assistance from friends, tradespeople, and online tutorials. The couple, both doctors, dedicated weekends and evenings to these projects after their two young daughters were asleep.
Eventually, they recognized the necessity of hiring an architect, particularly one with expertise in Passivhaus and energy-efficient architecture. They engaged Matt Loader of Glasgow-based firm Loader Monteith before even finalizing the purchase of the house. Their primary goal was to transform the property into a sustainable and functional home. A sense of "climate anxiety" motivated their approach to the renovation, with Loader suggesting the project could serve as a model for sustainable solutions. The late-19th-century house, though structurally sound, suffered from poor insulation, disjointed interiors, and inefficient energy systems. The renovation began in late 2022 and was expected to conclude in mid-2024, aiming to provide an example for other homeowners interested in sustainability.
The renovation incorporated several key sustainable and DIY-friendly features. For insulation, they opted for wood fiber in the walls and breathable, sponge-like wood fiber for the floors, ensuring an efficient and airtight interior volume. This involved removing old insulation, replacing hard insulation boards, and applying lime plaster. A custom-designed kitchen by Fenella, featuring a coffee station, two ovens, quartz countertops, a magnetic copper backsplash, and a communal island, was also a highlight. Fenella utilized Rhino 3D modeling software to design the cabinetry, which her father then CNC-cut from plywood, with the final cabinets stained with black India ink. James personally undertook the installation of nearly 800 square feet of microcement floors over one week. This DIY project, chosen for its seamless appearance without grout lines, was challenging due to a tight timeline, James's chest infection, and the lack of heating during winter, though training videos from Relentless Microcement proved helpful.
Further family-friendly DIY elements included a play area storage unit designed by Fenella and constructed on-site. Her father devised a system using linear plywood joints to secure the shelves, ensuring precision due to the CNC cutting process. The dining room bench was a collaborative effort between James and a colleague, crafted from knotless pine. As a result of these efforts, James and Fenella have already observed significant benefits. Their energy bill has been reduced by one-third due to the home's transition away from gas, and the house maintains warmth more effectively in winter. James emphasized the importance of making sustainable retrofits widely accessible, stating that it is a necessary endeavor for everyone.
