This wallcoverings designer wants art to have a life beyond a blank wall

Liane Ricci, an artist based in Durham, North Carolina, has spent the past four years transforming her abstract paintings into sophisticated wallcoverings. Her journey into this unique art form began with a diverse educational background, including painting and ceramics at the University of Hartford, and fashion illustration and costumes at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Despite showing her paintings in numerous New York City galleries, Ricci experienced a pivotal moment in 2016 during an intensive workshop on fresco murals in Vittorio Veneto, Italy. This experience revealed to her the potential for art to transcend traditional canvases and become an immersive, environmental element. Upon returning to the United States, Ricci started exploring printed wallpapers. Her creative process involves loose drawings and shape experimentation, which serve as references for her primary artworks. These paintings are then scanned, digitally refined, and manipulated into repeated patterns suitable for wallcoverings. In mid-2017, Ricci launched her initial collection of printed wallpapers, alongside a small selection of hand-painted wallcoverings. Her career significantly accelerated in 2020 after a pivotal meeting with David Sutherland, which led to her moving into a larger art studio in Durham, hiring her first employee, and creating murals for the Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Dallas for designer Kirsten Kelli. Ricci Studio currently offers six lines of digitally printed wallpapers. These are distinguished by their use of fibrous, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)–certified natural sisal flax, printed with UV gel ink. Ricci particularly values the paper's watercolor-like texture, which she believes enhances the aesthetic of her designs. Her artistic method is described as organic, often allowing charcoal lines and shapes to form spontaneously before evolving into paintings and ultimately, printed wallpapers. She seeks intriguing shapes, sometimes layering separate drawings and adjusting transparencies to uncover new forms. Experimentation with scale and composition is central to her practice, aiming for a balanced and succinct final piece. For her latest collection, Riverbed, Ricci utilized acrylic glazes on smooth birchwood panels, allowing the paint to drip and create a rhythmic effect that evokes flowing water. Fragments from photographs of these paintings are then meticulously reassembled to form crisp, yet fluid and organic, geometric patterns. Beyond printed options, Ricci Studio also provides a line of hand-painted wall panels, available in custom lengths, and a bespoke service for custom-crafted wallpaper murals, which function as original works of art. Ricci emphasizes that paint has an unpredictable quality, guiding her creative process. Her ultimate objective is to design painted environments that evoke positive feelings and engage those who experience them. #WallcoveringsDesigner #LianeRicci #RicciStudio #AbstractArt #TextileDesign #InteriorDesign #Wallpaper #HandPaintedWallpanels #KipsBayDecoratorShowHouse #WallcoveringsDesigner #LianeRicci #RicciStudio #AbstractArt #TextileDesign #InteriorDesign #Wallpaper #HandPaintedWallpanels #KipsBayDecoratorShowHouse
