An award-winning subtropical home design featuring Lysaght cladding products
The "Myocum Magic" residence, located in the Byron Shire hinterland, has been recognized as the 2025 Lysaght Inspirations Design Awards winner for Residential Design. This dwelling exemplifies a sophisticated blend of climate-responsive architectural principles, contextual integration with its landscape, and meticulous detailing.
Drawing inspiration from tropical modernism, the design prioritizes subtropical living by fostering seamless connections between its interior and exterior spaces. The structure is oriented approximately 20 degrees north to optimize solar access, while incorporating a range of passive design strategies. These include the use of burnished concrete floors for effective thermal mass, strategically shaded apertures, and a comprehensive cross-ventilation system to regulate internal temperatures naturally.
A key architectural feature is the post-free corner glazing, which creates an uninterrupted visual and physical link between the main living area, the outdoor terrace, and the swimming pool. This connection to the outdoors is further enhanced by an open-air bathroom, reinforcing a deep sense of integration with the natural surroundings. The aesthetic and structural definition of the residence is achieved through carefully considered elements such as spotted gum soffits with a subtle return, cantilevered slab edges that add visual lightness, and sculpted concrete-timber steps that provide both functional access and artistic flair.
Beyond its aesthetic and passive design considerations, the home is equipped with robust performance features. These include an 85,000-liter rainwater harvesting system, a substantial 13.3 kW solar array for energy generation, and full compliance with BAL 29 bushfire requirements, ensuring safety and sustainability. The building’s robust and low-maintenance envelope is significantly contributed to by ENSEAM cladding from Lysaght’s ZENITH range. The vertical profile of this cladding harmonizes with the project’s chosen material palette of timber and concrete, while also providing enhanced fire resistance and contributing to the longevity of the materials.
The project underscores the importance of thoughtful material selection and design in creating a resilient and comfortable subtropical home that respects its environment and performs efficiently. The Lysaght ENSEAM cladding, in particular, plays a dual role in both defining the architectural character and meeting critical performance criteria for durability and safety.
