This Smart Bulb Rescued My Rental Apartment From the Horror of ‘The Big Light’ | Reviews by Wirecutter
Living in a rental apartment in Los Angeles in 2024 offers a certain level of comfort, but it also presents limitations, especially concerning interior design elements. A common issue faced by renters is the pervasive presence of "the big light"—a term coined on TikTok to describe bright, overhead, and often unflattering light fixtures such as chandeliers, ceiling fans, or flush-mounted ceiling lights. In the author's case, this meant contending with two unsightly ceiling fans in the living room and bedroom, along with three intensely exposed bulbs in the bathroom, all of which created a sterile and disruptive ambiance.
The author initially felt constrained by budget and the fear of electrocution or upsetting the landlord, preventing conventional solutions like installing dimmer switches or purchasing numerous floor and table lamps. This led to enduring uncomfortable lighting conditions every evening, sometimes opting to keep the lights off entirely, which metaphorically and literally left things in the dark.
The WiZ 60W A19 Color LED Smart Bulb emerged as a transformative solution. Despite initial apprehension about smart-home technology, the bulb proved easy to use through its intuitive app. While primarily sought for its dimming capabilities to mitigate the harshness of the existing fixtures, the WiZ bulb offered unexpected additional benefits. It allowed for customization of light color, enabling settings like warm rose for evenings and soft yellow for mornings, and featured a timer function to automatically adjust brightness levels throughout the day.
Implementing the WiZ bulbs drastically improved the apartment's atmosphere. The living room shifted from a hospital-lobby feel to a more inviting and magical environment. In the bathroom, the new lighting boosted confidence, making the idea of aging more appealing. The primary drawback identified was the reliance on a smartphone app for control, which could be inconvenient if the phone was in another room. While the bulb could also be controlled via a smart speaker or a compatible button, the author expressed a preference for avoiding voice commands and found the design of the physical button unappealing. The WiZ app, however, allowed for organizing lighting by room and naming specific bulbs for easier management.
A minor initial challenge was friends and family instinctively flipping wall switches, overriding the smart bulb settings. This was resolved by utilizing the WiZ app's "last status" feature, which restores the bulb to its previous color and brightness after being switched off. This provided a less intrusive alternative to physically modifying wall switches. Ultimately, the smart bulb offered a practical and landlord-approved way to personalize and improve the living space, demonstrating that even without a perfect world, a significant enhancement to daily comfort and ambiance is achievable.
