I used this smart light to illuminate the most awkward part of my house — and it works for every room
This article details the author's experience with the Govee Strip Light with Skyline Kit to solve a specific lighting challenge in their living room. The author faced difficulties with traditional overhead lighting due to vaulted and popcorn ceilings in an older home built in the 1970s. Existing solutions, such as two floor lamps with smart light bulbs, provided insufficient illumination for a comfortable workspace. A monitor light bar offered a partial solution for one desk but left another area inadequately lit.
The core problem addressed in the article is the inability to install a conventional lightstrip directly onto the textured popcorn ceiling without issues of adhesion or sagging. The author discovered the Govee Strip Light with Skyline Kit, which features a unique mounting system designed to suspend a lightstrip between two walls using a steel strip. This innovative design eliminates the need for direct ceiling adhesion, making it suitable for challenging surfaces like popcorn ceilings.
The Govee Strip Light with Skyline Kit includes the lightstrip itself, a large steel strip for mounting, mounting bases, rotation bars for tensioning, and necessary hardware. The lightstrip utilizes RGBWWIC (Red, Green, Blue, Warm White, White, Independent Control) technology, which offers enhanced color accuracy, particularly for white light. The rotation bars within the mounting bases are crucial, as they allow for tensioning the steel strip after installation to ensure it remains straight and sag-free, even when suspended over a long distance.
Installation involved testing the lightstrip, cutting the steel strip to the desired length (13.5 feet from a 19.7-foot kit), and using a paper template for preliminary marking. The mounting bases were secured using a combination of wall anchors and direct stud attachment. Instead of the typical installation (about a foot from a wall to bathe it in ambient light), the author opted for a covert placement, tucking the lightstrip behind a beam in the living room. This strategic positioning allows the light to shine onto the vaulted ceiling, providing ambient illumination without the lightstrip being visible from the front of the room. The author also confirms that this setup prevents glare on their monitor.
After successful installation, the lightstrip was integrated with the Govee app. The RGBWWIC technology proved effective in producing bright and clear white light, which is dimmable for night use. The app offers 154 preset scenes and leverages Govee’s LuminBlend color management system for vibrant, accurate color mixing and AI-generated color combinations. The author highlights the versatility of the lightstrip for various moods and occasions, such as setting a specific color for a birthday party or using Festival scenes for holidays. The article concludes by emphasizing the product's effectiveness in providing a long-term, aesthetically pleasing lighting solution for difficult spaces, improving both work and social environments, and making video calls easier due to consistent background illumination.
