I used this smart light strip to transform my living room — and it's been a game changer for my home
The author recounts their struggle with inadequate overhead lighting in their living room due to vaulted ceilings and a lack of existing wiring. Traditional lighting solutions proved insufficient for comfortable desk work, even with the addition of smart light bulbs and a monitor light bar. The author's wife's desk, positioned on the other side of the fireplace, also suffered from poor lighting. A key challenge was the presence of popcorn ceilings throughout the 1970s-built home, making adhesive-backed light strips a problematic option.
After contemplating various solutions, the author discovered the Govee Strip Light with Skyline Kit ($119 @ Amazon), which offered an innovative mounting system. This kit is available in 13-foot and 20-foot lengths and includes the light strip, a steel strip for mounting, mounting bases, rotation bars, and necessary hardware. The light strip features Govee’s RGBWWIC (Red, Green, Blue, Warm White, White, Independent Control) technology, promising improved color accuracy, especially for white light.
The unique aspect of the Skyline Kit is its steel strip, which allows the light strip to be suspended between two walls without sagging, even over textured surfaces like popcorn ceilings. The mounting bases and rotation bars enable tensioning of the steel strip for a perfectly straight installation. While it supports angled installations, the author opted for a horizontal, wall-to-wall setup on their living room beam.
Installation involved testing the light strip, cutting the steel strip to the desired length (13.5 feet from a 19.7-foot kit), and using a paper template for precise marking of mounting holes. The bases were secured using a combination of wall anchors and direct stud attachment. The light strip was then affixed to the steel strip, and the rotation bars were used to create tension, ensuring a sag-free span. The placement was designed to be covert, with the light strip hidden behind the beam, casting light onto the vaulted ceiling.
Upon activation, the light strip successfully illuminated the living room, providing ample, glare-free light for both work and ambient settings. The RGBWWIC technology delivered bright and clear white light, which was dimmable and customizable, even allowing for different color temperatures on opposite sides of the room. The Govee app facilitated easy setup, offering 154 preset scenes and leveraging LuminBlend color management for vibrant colors. The author also explored using the light strip for festive occasions with various color combinations and scenes. The solution proved to be a practical and aesthetically pleasing long-term fix for a challenging lighting problem, enhancing the functionality and ambiance of the living room, and improving video call illumination.
