The Features Designers Look for When They’re Shopping for Kitchen Appliances

The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) conducts an annual survey of industry professionals, including designers, dealers, architects, and remodelers, to forecast upcoming kitchen trends. For 2025, the survey predicts a rise in green cabinets, a 1970s design revival, larger windows, and the increased popularity of solid surface backsplashes over traditional subway or mosaic tiles. The survey also delved into specific appliance preferences, highlighting which features professionals prioritize and which they consider less significant. For dishwashers, the overwhelming majority (82%) of professionals anticipate a growing demand for ultra-quiet models, emphasizing convenience during use, particularly overnight. Additional preferred features include a third rack and an adjustable upper rack. Conversely, Wi-Fi connectivity and voice activation are not expected to gain significant traction, with only 18% of respondents foreseeing an increased demand for these features. In the refrigerator category, designers foresee a strong preference for fully integrated (64%) and flush-with-counter (55%) hidden units, especially if they are paneled (69%) and feature French doors. Internally, configurable storage (84%) and extra drawers are highly sought after. Beverage chilling units are also projected to increase in popularity, with 74% of professionals noting their rise. In contrast, Wi-Fi-connected refrigerators are not a priority, with only 5% expressing strong interest, and freestanding units are expected to decline in popularity, with only 13% favoring them. Regarding cooking appliances, a significant majority (91%) predict a high demand for multi-functional units, encompassing ovens, ranges, and microwaves. Air fryers (62%) and induction cooktops (66%) are identified as top appliance types. Enhanced usability, including precise temperature control and reduced cooking times, is deemed a crucial goal by 65% of professionals. Stainless steel (68%) and black stainless (37%) are the preferred finish choices. However, retro/vintage (22%) and hidden (29%) aesthetics for cooking appliances are not favored. For vent hoods, the trend leans towards decorative models that function as a kitchen centerpiece, a sentiment shared by 60% of professionals. Wood and painted wood are anticipated to be popular material choices, cited by 66% of respondents. Steel and glass, however, are considered less popular materials for vent hoods, with only 13% of participants marking them as such. The overall sentiment suggests a movement towards making the kitchen a more integrated and comfortable living space. #KitchenDesign #ApplianceTrends #NKBA #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #KitchenAppliances #DesignTrends2025 #SmartHomeFeatures #Renovation #KitchenDesign #ApplianceTrends #NKBA #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #KitchenAppliances #DesignTrends2025 #SmartHomeFeatures #Renovation
