megre interiors renovates 150-year-old fonarnye bani in st. petersburg

Megre Interiors has undertaken a significant renovation of 'Fonarnye Bani,' one of St. Petersburg's oldest and most historically important bathhouses, which dates back to 1870. The bathhouse had been closed for 15 years prior to this extensive reconstruction project. The design team, in collaboration with restorer Rafael Dayanoy, aimed to restore certain areas of the building to their original historical appearance, based on fragments of stucco, decor, brackets, rods, and cornices discovered within the dilapidated structure. However, for a substantial portion of the complex, a full historical recreation was not feasible, necessitating a modern reinterpretation of the historic building while respecting its heritage. The core challenge for Megre Interiors was to strike a balance between preserving the building's historicism and integrating contemporary design elements. Their approach centered on design purity, ensuring that the preserved architectural elements, proportions, and volumes remained prominent, while simultaneously crafting a cozy and functional space. The design strategy involved a gradual transition in interior aesthetic as guests move deeper into the facility. This progression begins with a welcoming lobby characterized by rich brick bardo walls and a carved chocolate wood fireplace, leading to a pristine, snow-white soapy lobby where a thin black line subtly highlights the historical architecture. A key aspect of the restoration involved reinstating the front entrance from Fonarny Lane, a possibility realized through the efforts of Artem Shakhnazarov. Megre Interiors meticulously recreated the interior of this entrance, using an exact replica of the original tiles, a fragment of which was discovered during the dismantling of an old wooden cash register from the 1930s. The boutique area for bath products at the entrance was also restored. Guests are directed to the second floor via the main staircase, arriving at the central lobby, which features a circular reception desk designed with carvings reminiscent of the historical period. The original communication pathways, including the central cross of corridors and stairs designed by Suzor, were maintained in the new planning solutions. The second floor now accommodates the main lobby, complete with its fireplace and comfortable sofas, a café-pub with cast-iron tables (restored from historical engravings) and marble walls, changing rooms, a salon, and a barber’s office. Below this level are economy and individual rooms, with a restaurant situated on the floor above. The female changing room is envisioned as a romantic and enveloping space, incorporating elements inspired by surviving engravings, such as a large carved fireplace and a central column, which introduce an unusual level of coziness for a changing area. In contrast, the men's changing room on the second floor boasts a restored tiled fireplace and a bronze mascaron with a triton's head, both original to the building. The men's recreation area also saw restoration according to historical sketches, with the entrance area designed to echo this style. Furnaces from the 1930s renovation were preserved during the reconstruction. The soap zones in both locker rooms share a unified aesthetic, though the economy rooms downstairs utilize different materials to alter the spatial perception. The individual bath areas are designed to exude comfort and luxury, creating an atmosphere akin to a private merchant's house rather than a public bath. #HistoricRenovation #BathhouseDesign #InteriorDesign #StPetersburgArchitecture #ArchitecturalRestoration #MegreInteriors #AdaptiveReuse #CulturalHeritage #HistoricRenovation #BathhouseDesign #InteriorDesign #StPetersburgArchitecture #ArchitecturalRestoration #MegreInteriors #AdaptiveReuse #CulturalHeritage
