5 small entryway storage mistakes designers want you to stop making

This article outlines five common mistakes people make when organizing small entryways and provides expert advice from interior designers on how to avoid them. The primary goal is to maximize space and reduce clutter in these often-overlooked areas of the home. One significant error is attempting to fit oversized furniture into a small entryway. Interior designer Kathy Kuo emphasizes that forcing large pieces where they don't belong creates a cluttered and illogical space. Instead, she recommends opting for narrow console tables, smaller side tables, or even nightstands that are more proportionate to the available space. This approach helps maintain visual balance and functionality. Another frequent mistake is underestimating the value of vertical space. Artem Kropovinsky, founder of Arsight, highlights the importance of utilizing walls for storage. He suggests installing wall hooks, shelves, and slimline storage units to keep items off the floor, thus preventing a crowded look. Ricky Allen, director of Ever Wallpaper, adds that these vertical solutions can effectively store accessories like hats and scarves and serve as display areas for decorative items such as plants. This not only organizes belongings but also contributes to a smoother daily routine by keeping outerwear and accessories readily accessible. The article also addresses the mistake of not personalizing storage solutions to suit individual household needs. Ricky Allen points out that a one-size-fits-all approach to entryway storage often leads to either insufficient or excessive storage. For families with children, storage ottomans are suggested as a practical solution for bulky items. Conversely, a smaller household might only require a single basket for essentials, indicating that storage choices should directly reflect the occupants' lifestyles and belongings. Furthermore, using standalone benches solely as a dumping ground for coats and bags is identified as a common misstep. Home improvement expert Tommy Mello, founder of A1 Garage Door Service, explains that this practice undermines the bench's primary function as a seating area and disrupts the entryway's visual order. The recommended alternative is to choose benches with integrated storage compartments, which allow items to be neatly stowed away, thereby reducing visual clutter while retaining the seating utility. Finally, the article cautions against the indiscriminate use of open woven baskets. While aesthetically pleasing, Tommy Mello notes that open baskets can quickly become disorganized and contribute to a chaotic appearance. He advises selecting concealed storage options or woven baskets with lids to keep belongings out of sight and maintain a tidy entryway. If open woven baskets are already present, repurposing them for other areas, such as living room blanket storage, is suggested to enhance their chic appeal. Adopting these expert-backed strategies ensures that entryways remain functional, organized, and welcoming spaces. #SmallEntryway #HomeOrganization #InteriorDesignTips #StorageSolutions #Decluttering #VerticalSpace #FurniturePlacement #EntrywayDecor #KathyKuoHome #SmallEntryway #HomeOrganization #InteriorDesignTips #StorageSolutions #Decluttering #VerticalSpace #FurniturePlacement #EntrywayDecor #KathyKuoHome
