The 8 Best Paint Primers for Indoor, Outdoor, and General Use

Applying a paint primer before painting is crucial for better adherence, preventing peeling, and reducing the number of paint coats needed. The article reviews eight top paint primers, categorizing them by their best use cases, and provides detailed insights into their performance based on testing. The testing methodology involved applying each primer to various surfaces such as metal, masonry, drywall, and wood, including surfaces with water stains, mildew, and smoke odors. Two coats of primer were applied, allowed to dry for an hour, and then followed by a flat white top coat to assess stain bleedthrough and the smoothness of the finish. Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Base Primer is rated as the best overall due to its low odor, low VOC content, mold and mildew resistance, and versatility across multiple surfaces including drywall, wood, metal, and plastic. Although it sometimes required two coats for an even finish and did not completely block heavy water stains, its wide applicability made it a top choice. Kilz Original Interior Primer is highlighted as the best value for money, excelling in blocking heavy interior stains and odors on various porous surfaces like wood, drywall, plaster, and masonry. This oil-based primer effectively blocked light stains and worked best when tinted gray for stubborn stains, despite its strong odor necessitating good ventilation. For an all-purpose option, Kilz 2 All-Purpose Interior/Exterior Primer is recommended. This water-based primer has lower VOCs than the Original Kilz, is suitable for both interior and exterior use, blocks light to medium stains and mild odors, and leaves a mildew-resistant finish. It proved effective for general priming, sealing, and craft projects, although it only moderately blocked dark stains. Rust-Oleum Clean Metal Primer is specifically designed for metal surfaces, preventing rust and providing a durable finish on lightly rusted, bare, or previously painted metals, as well as wood, concrete, and masonry. It requires sanding for smooth, glossy surfaces to ensure proper adhesion. Kilz Adhesion Interior/Exterior Primer is ideal for glossy surfaces such as PVC, vinyl, glass, tile, and glazed brick, as it bonds without the need for sanding. While it typically required multiple thin layers for optimal adhesion, it offers the same stain and odor-blocking properties as other Kilz primers. Kilz Restoration Interior Primer is praised for its odor-blocking capabilities, particularly against smoke, pet urine, and food odors, performing like oil-based primers but with water-based cleanup convenience. It also covers light to medium stains, but its primary strength lies in odor sealing. Kilz 3 Premium Interior/Exterior Primer is recommended for exterior use due to its excellent adhesion, mildew resistance, and ability to minimize issues from color changes and surface porosity. It created a smooth finish on new wood framing and performed well in high-humidity conditions, although it is not formulated for glossy surfaces without prior preparation. Finally, Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint Interior Acrylic Latex is presented as the best for interior walls, serving as a paint-and-primer combo that offers thick coverage and a lasting finish, especially useful for one-coat coverage on drywall, trim, and ceilings, even though it is a pricier option. #PaintPrimer #HomeImprovement #DIYProjects #InteriorPainting #ExteriorPainting #StainBlocking #OdorBlocking #PaintReviews #PaintPrimer #HomeImprovement #DIYProjects #InteriorPainting #ExteriorPainting #StainBlocking #OdorBlocking #PaintReviews
