Who needs a Zoom background when your home office looks this good?
The shift towards hybrid working models has significantly elevated the importance and aesthetic consideration of the home office. Moving beyond purely functional spaces, contemporary home offices are now integral design elements that foster both creativity and productivity. This article showcases ten diverse and stylish home office concepts from the ELLE Decoration archive, illustrating how thoughtful design, furniture selection, and storage solutions can transform a workspace into an inspiring environment.
One featured design, by Batiik Studio, exemplifies how bold choices like a leopard-print carpet by Madeleine Castaing and an India Mahdavi sconce can create a vibrant and engaging work area. This Parisian apartment office, with its cosy yellow walls, also incorporates vintage pieces such as a 'Zig-Zag' chair by Gerrit Rietveld and a Hiromi Objets lamp, adding a unique retro charm.
Another example is a 'mindfully curated' study by Charu Gandhi, located in a family home where two bedrooms were converted into offices. This design emphasizes functionality without sacrificing elegance, featuring custom light oak shelving with walnut drawer fronts by Bill Cleyndert & Company. Mid-century design influences are evident in pieces like the Bodo Sperlein ‘Contourline’ desk and Michel Amar’s ‘Swan’ lamp, complemented by a HAG desk chair, an Apparatus ‘Circuit: 7’ pendant, and a Holland Cassidy rug.
A cheerful home office in Paris, designed by Marion Stora, demonstrates the power of color, with walls cloaked in Argile’s ‘Gui D’Octobre’ paint. Customised shelving by DimoreMilano, featuring a leather-wrapped desk level, and classic furniture like Pierre Chapo’s ‘S34’ chair and a vintage Angelo Lelii table lamp, create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Atelier HA presents a flexible work and leisure space carpeted in Lano’s ‘Dream – Living Colours.’ This area, primarily furnished with vintage finds such as the sofa, desk, and chair, incorporates heavy Elitis curtains for added cosiness and includes art by Catherine Lavialle and lighting by François Bazin and Gianfranco Frattini.
DIIP architects illustrate that a dedicated room isn't always necessary for an effective home office. Their loft-style apartment design ingeniously uses a corner next to a tangerine staircase, integrating custom silver-fir joinery and an ‘S43’ chair by Mart Stam for Thonet to form a compact and stylish study nook.
David Montalba’s approach to WFH spaces in Beverly Hills features a Rose Tarlow desk as a focal point, with Stefan Simchowitz's 'Straight Up Palms' artwork providing an element of escapism. The office is further enhanced by ‘Bixby’ lamps by Made Goods, a ‘Glencoe’ sideboard by Jean de Merry, an ‘Eames Soft Pad’ desk chair, and a ‘Scheggia’ armchair by Mario Ferrarini.
In Peckham, a fashion-forward office by Jill McNair draws inspiration from a Gucci advertisement, featuring an olive green room, an Eames chair, a vintage desk from The Modern Warehouse, and a red ‘Bellhop’ lamp by Barber Osgerby for Flos.
A studious home office in a Barbican apartment by A New Design utilizes olive-green walls (Farrow & Ball’s ‘Bancha’) to signal a space for concentration. This room includes a steel-back chair from Monument, a ‘Scalloped’ writing desk by Max McLintock, Morris & Co. curtains, a Knots Rugs ‘Sahara’ rug, and unique desk accessories like a Katie Moore ‘Wobble’ pot and a Helle Mardahl ‘Bon Bon’ coffee glass.
Finally, a home office retreat in Melbourne, designed by Woods Bagot, is attached to the main bedroom, featuring Rimadesio’s ‘Zenit’ shelving system as a divider. This sophisticated space is appointed with an Arne Jacobsen ‘Swan’ chair, a ‘Compas Direction’ desk by Jean Prouvé, and a 1950s Stilnovo floor lamp, creating a serene and productive environment.
