A Look at an Architect’s A-Frame Home Office Makeover
This blog post details the transformation of an A-frame home office in a 1959 beach cottage, undertaken by an architect and his wife. The space, originally a walled-off bedroom, was uniquely modified with a glass panel overlooking the living room, making it an ideal candidate for a dedicated home office. The redesign was inspired by a viral TikTok video featuring a dream home office setup, prompting the couple to focus on a particular desk as the centerpiece for their new workspace. They selected the Ridge Bleached Oak Desk from CB2, which served as the foundational element around which the rest of the office's aesthetic was built.
The couple aimed to complement the desk with other light oak furniture to maintain a cohesive design. They chose the Wooster Sideboard from Serena & Lily, noted for its wooden frame and textural linen doors, adding to the room's elegant and natural feel. For seating, they sought a cost-effective alternative to the expensive Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, ultimately finding a virtually identical dupe, the Emma Lounge Chair and Ottoman from Keeks Design, which was significantly more affordable. This allowed them to achieve the desired look without exceeding their budget after a major home purchase.
To introduce a grounding element and add texture, the couple installed FLOR carpet tiles in the Tweed Indeed pattern with a Lichen colorway. This choice not only provided a soft, neutral base but also subtly mirrored the design of the CB2 desk legs. Recognizing the potential for the room to become too monochromatic with the prevalent beige and light oak tones, they strategically incorporated elements to introduce color and life. Two fiddle leaf ficus plants in QCP’s Bayamo Round planters were placed to frame the desk, adding greenery and a natural touch.
The search for artwork led them to “Out of Office” by Anna Landstedt from Helm + Oar, a piece featuring colorful striped umbrellas and a playful cardboard sign. This selection infused the space with vibrant hues and a touch of whimsical irony, creating a focal point above the Serena & Lily console table. The console table itself was adorned with a succulent-filled concrete herb trough from March SF, further enhancing the natural and decorative aspects of the office.
Addressing the need for storage, especially for the architect’s extensive collection of architectural books, the couple opted for two Trent Austin Design Flythe Ladder Bookcases from Wayfair. These wall-mounted bookcases offered ample space for books and decor, while also providing an important safety feature against tipping, a consideration given their young child. The shelves were styled with personal items such as photos, plants, and sentimental artwork, alongside Mustard Made baskets filled with children’s books and toys, making the office a functional and personalized space for both work and family interaction. The overall makeover successfully transformed the A-frame space into a stylish, functional, and inviting home office that balances aesthetic appeal with practical needs.
