Wendy and Cleve Meredith, drawing inspiration from their New England background, undertook a significant renovation of their 1930s Cape Cod-style home in Atlanta. The house, which had remained largely unaltered for decades, presented a unique opportunity for an update without expanding its original footprint. Existing scalloped-niche and Shaker-style cabinetry was ingeniously adapted to conceal a refrigerator and pantry. Custom cabinets throughout the kitchen were designed to be slightly oversized, with upper cabinets deepened by 2 to 3 inches to accommodate larger items, and lower cabinets equipped with drawers for easier access. A wooden plank backsplash was chosen over tile to maintain a seamless, old-fashioned cottage aesthetic. A central, space-saving pocket door now connects the kitchen to the dining room. The dining room itself was updated to evoke a sense of history without feeling overly formal. The upper walls were painted the same gray as the kitchen island, creating continuity between the adjacent spaces, while creamy horizontal wood planks were installed below the chair rail. The stair landing was updated with a Roman shade in a Quadrille fabric, New Batik Cloud New Brown on Tint. In the bedrooms, Hillegas blended new and vintage elements. Chris and Jenn Goode purchased their 1960s home in Alexandria's Villamay neighborhood primarily for its Potomac River views, despite its traditional style, dated finishes, limited lighting, and insufficient space for their three growing children, aged 9, 11, and 14. Their vision for the renovation was to transform the house into a spacious, rustic-chic sanctuary that offered enough individual space for every family member. Case Architects & Remodelers, led by director of project development April Case Underwood, was enlisted for the remodel. Underwood, having previously worked with the Goodes on their kitchen, understood their preference for a more transitional style. The original home was deemed outdated and lacked cohesion, especially for entertaining guests or accommodating three children preparing for school with only one shared bathroom. The renovation aimed to address these issues by expanding the living areas and updating the aesthetics to better suit the family's needs and style. A significant part of the renovation involved adding a two-story extension to the front of the house. This addition created a new primary bedroom suite for Chris and Jenn, which included dedicated his-and-her closets and a five-piece bathroom.
