THIS Popular Design Feature Cheapens Your Home, According to Property Brother Drew Scott
Drew Scott, one half of the popular ‘Property Brothers’ duo, has voiced a strong opinion regarding a common home design feature: floating shelves, particularly when placed alongside a large television in a living room. Scott believes that this straightforward setup tends to cheapen the overall aesthetic of a home, advocating for more thoughtful and customized design solutions. This perspective was highlighted during an episode of ‘Celebrity IOU’ featuring Olympic snowboarder Shaun White, where Scott and White were tasked with designing a TV feature wall for one of White’s friends in Ventura Beach, California.
During the design process, Shaun White initially suggested the use of slim shelving. While acknowledging floating shelves as a basic option, Scott immediately expressed his preference for an approach that would elevate the design beyond a generic, mass-produced look. He articulated his concern that simply arranging two columns of floating shelves, with three shelves on each side of the TV, would appear “not interesting enough” and “just generic, boring.” Scott challenged White to consider how they could transform the wall into a distinctive statement rather than a mere backdrop for a television with minimal decorative elements.
To achieve a more unique and dynamic display, Scott and White opted for a custom French cleat system. This innovative system integrated a variety of wood shelves and boxes in different sizes and configurations. The key advantage of this modular feature is its versatility, allowing the homeowners to easily reconfigure and update their display as their preferences change or as they acquire new decorative items. This adaptability ensures that the display wall can evolve over time, accommodating an array of items such as family photos, plants, and travel souvenirs.
The custom French cleat system represents a significant upgrade from the conventional floating shelf arrangement. It provides a personalized touch that avoids the common pitfalls of uninspired and readily available design choices. Scott’s advice underscores the importance of intentionality in home design, suggesting that homeowners should strive for bespoke solutions that reflect their individual style and enhance the unique character of their living spaces. By encouraging creative and adaptable installations, Scott aims to help homeowners create environments that feel distinct and well-curated, rather than merely functional.
