10 retro design trends that could be devaluing your property by thousands

Outdated interior design choices can significantly detract from a property's value and deter potential buyers. Property developer Scarlette Douglas highlights ten retro design trends that commonly devalue homes and provides practical, cost-effective solutions to update them. These suggestions aim to enhance a property's appeal and increase its market value without requiring extensive renovations. Old-fashioned wood paneling, for instance, is identified as a significant detractor, with 46% of prospective buyers finding it off-putting. Removing it and replacing it with modern, tasteful wallpaper or painting the panels in neutral colors like white or light grey can instantly brighten a room and increase its value. Similarly, avocado bathroom suites, a relic from the past, are highly undesirable, with 44% of buyers being turned away by them. Swapping these for sleek white suites, which can be acquired for as little as £300, is a highly effective way to boost a home's saleability, as 71% of the UK population stated a stylish new bathroom would increase their likelihood of making an offer. Built-in bars, especially dated ones, are another common deterrent, with 41% of individuals reporting they would immediately leave a property upon seeing one. While complete removal might be a significant undertaking, toning down the bar by removing stools and drinks, painting it a neutral color, and adding family photos and flowers can make it less imposing and more inviting. Wood chip wallpaper, widespread in older homes, is now considered incredibly out of fashion, with 41% of buyers rejecting properties with it. This type of wallpaper is relatively easy to remove with the right tools, making it a simple upgrade. Artex ceilings, prevalent in the 1970s for their textured effect, are also a major turn-off for 40% of buyers. Professional removal is recommended for Artex installed before the 1980s due to the potential presence of asbestos. Heavily patterned carpets, once fashionable, are now seen as dated, causing a third of UK buyers to reconsider a purchase. Replacing such carpets, especially in high-traffic areas like the entrance hall and living room, with budget-friendly, good-quality alternatives can significantly improve first impressions. Textured wallpaper from the 1980s also falls into this category, deterring 34% of buyers. Removing it and opting for simple, modern wallpaper designs, perhaps creating a feature wall, can refresh a space. Crazy paving on driveways and gardens, while popular historically, can devalue a home as 33% of buyers would be deterred by the thought of replacing it. More valuable options include covering it with wooden decking, or for a cheaper fix, disguising it with numerous pot plants. Old-fashioned, built-in brick or stone fireplaces are another trend that turns off 33% of prospective buyers. Instead of a full removal, updating the hearth with modern materials like slate or tiles and painting the stones a light color can modernize its appearance. Finally, built-in wardrobe cupboards that surround the bed, common in the 1980s, are disliked by 30% of buyers. An easy fix involves removing the bridging cupboards over the bed, which can make the room appear larger and more contemporary, thereby attracting more interest from potential buyers. #HomeRenovation #PropertyValue #InteriorDesignTrends #HomeDecor #RealEstateTips #RetroTrends #HomeStaging #ScarletteDouglas #DIYHomeImprovement #HomeRenovation #PropertyValue #InteriorDesignTrends #HomeDecor #RealEstateTips #RetroTrends #HomeStaging #ScarletteDouglas #DIYHomeImprovement
