'Potential buyers may see it as a DIY job gone wrong' – this popular interior trend may be devaluing your home

Wood panelling has recently gained significant popularity as an interior trend, with many homeowners undertaking DIY installations. While visually appealing and capable of elevating a home's aesthetic, expert opinions suggest that it may, in some cases, devalue a property. This article explores the nuances of wood panelling, examining both its perceived drawbacks and advantages, along with offering alternative design solutions. Terry Fisher of We Buy Any Home warns that poorly executed wood panelling can make a home appear unfinished and messy, deterring potential buyers and negatively impacting property value. Similarly, James Newman, an interior designer at Raffle House, notes that while correctly installed panelling can add style, the use of thin, cheap slat panels, often seen on social media platforms like TikTok, can give a negative impression. He emphasizes that if a buyer dislikes the panelling, the cost of removal and replastering, potentially up to £1900, can be a significant deterrent. Despite these concerns, wood panelling is not without its merits. Jonathon Rolande, a property expert at House Buy Fast, highlights that in the right home, it can convey a sense of quality and luxury. Furthermore, it offers practical benefits, particularly in high-traffic areas like hallways, where it proves more durable than painted or wallpapered surfaces. Therefore, existing wood panelling should not necessarily be a cause for concern. For those drawn to the aesthetic of wood panelling but hesitant about its potential impact on property value or the commitment involved, several alternatives exist. Wood panel wallpaper, such as B&Q's Superfresco wood effect wallpaper, offers a less permanent and potentially more cost-effective solution. However, James Newman advises against excessive use of wallpaper if selling a home in the near future, as buyers may be put off by the prospect of stripping it. Regarding the impact on walls, removing wood panelling can damage the underlying surface, leading to costly repairs and replastering. As for adding value, experts generally agree that while panelling may make a home more desirable to a specific buyer, it does not typically increase the overall property value. In some instances, it could even reduce the value by approximately £2000 if it is not to a buyer's taste. Ultimately, the decision to install wood panelling should weigh personal enjoyment against potential resale implications. If the design significantly enhances the homeowner's living experience, the benefits may outweigh the potential financial risks, as home decoration is also about personal satisfaction. #HomeDecorTrends #WoodPanelling #PropertyValue #DIYHomeImprovements #InteriorDesign #WallDecor #HomeRenovation #WallpaperAlternatives #HomeDecorTrends #WoodPanelling #PropertyValue #DIYHomeImprovements #InteriorDesign #WallDecor #HomeRenovation #WallpaperAlternatives
