The One Way You Should NEVER Clean Laminate Floors

Laminate flooring, a popular choice in home design due to its resemblance to hardwood, lower cost, and easier installation, requires specific care to maintain its protective layer and prevent damage. Made from wood composite materials like sawdust, laminate floors feature a clear protective layer on top that necessitates proper cleaning techniques to avoid scratching and wear. Regular maintenance involves using a canister vacuum cleaner to remove dirt and debris from crevices. For those with upright vacuums, it is crucial to disable the rotating brush to prevent scratching the floor surface and scattering dirt. Deep cleaning should be performed approximately once a month, or more frequently for high-traffic areas such as kitchens. This process involves damp-mopping the floor with a mop equipped with a washable, reusable microfiber head, like those from Bona, or disposable pads, such as Swiffer. A laminate floor cleaner should be applied sparingly to avoid oversaturation, followed by wiping with the mop. Specific cleaning agents are recommended for laminate floors. Products like Weiman Hardwood Floor Cleaner, which carries the Good Housekeeping Seal, are effective. Black Diamond's Wood & Laminate Floor Cleaner is also highly rated, especially for spot cleaning scuff marks with its convenient spray bottle. Bona offers a dedicated cleaner for stone, tile, and laminate floors available in spray bottles or refill jugs. It is advised to avoid adding extra fragrances or essential oils to these cleaners, as their existing formulations already provide a pleasant scent, and additional ingredients could harm the protective coating of the floor. Regarding other cleaning tools, wet Swiffers and Swiffer WetJets are deemed safe for laminate floors. The wet Swiffer is suitable for quick cleaning of small areas, while the WetJet, with its battery-operated spray and integrated cleaning solution, is better suited for larger spaces. The disposable pads of Swiffer products eliminate the need for storing messy mops. However, steam mops are not recommended for laminate floors. Manufacturers caution against their use, and using them may void the product warranty. Although modern laminates are more resistant to moisture, steam can still cause warping and other forms of damage, making it essential to consult care guidelines provided by the flooring manufacturer before using such devices. To preserve the integrity of laminate floors, certain cleaning products and methods should be avoided. Polishing or waxing laminate floors is unnecessary and can cause damage. Abrasive cleaners, scouring powder, and steel wool should also be avoided, as they can scratch the surface and compromise the protective finish. #LaminateFloors #FloorCleaning #HomeMaintenance #CleaningTips #GoodHousekeeping #CleaningProducts #HomeCare #LaminateFloors #FloorCleaning #HomeMaintenance #CleaningTips #GoodHousekeeping #CleaningProducts #HomeCare
