5 surfaces you shouldn't use a steam cleaner on
Steam cleaners are effective tools for deep cleaning and sanitizing various surfaces without harsh chemicals. They are particularly useful for sealed hard floors, upholstery, and mattresses, offering an efficient way to maintain cleanliness. However, the heat and moisture generated by steam cleaners can cause irreparable damage to certain materials and surfaces within a home. Understanding which surfaces to avoid is crucial for preventing costly repairs and preserving the integrity of household items.
Laminate flooring is one such surface where steam cleaning is generally discouraged by manufacturers. Composed of fiberboard layers, laminate is susceptible to both moisture and heat, which can lead to swelling and irreversible damage. While some steam cleaner manufacturers might claim their products are safe for laminate, it is essential to ensure the steam cleaner leaves the surface as dry as possible. As an alternative, laminate floors should be cleaned with a soft brush, a damp (not wet) mop, or a microfibre cloth, always adhering to the manufacturer's specific cleaning instructions.
Materials like bamboo, cardboard, and other paper products are also unsuitable for steam cleaning. Bamboo, increasingly popular in home interiors for flooring and furniture, is a porous material that absorbs hot water, leading to damage. Similarly, cardboard and paper products will absorb moisture and deteriorate rapidly when exposed to steam. For bamboo, daily cleaning involves wiping with a soft cloth. Tougher stains can be addressed with a mild detergent on a damp, not wet, cloth, followed by thorough drying. Paper and cardboard items should first be gently wiped with a dry cloth; if more cleaning is needed, a slightly dampened cloth can be used, ensuring any excess moisture is promptly removed.
Unsealed wooden or parquet floors should never be steam cleaned. Unlike fully sealed hard floors, which are generally safe for steam cleaning, unsealed wood is vulnerable to the moisture from hot steam. This moisture can cause the wooden boards to swell and buckle, leading to significant damage. A simple test involving a water droplet can determine if a floor is sealed: if the water beads on top, it is sealed; if it soaks in, it is unsealed. For unsealed floors, it is best to consult the manufacturer or installer for recommended cleaning practices. Daily cleaning can be done with a microfiber cloth or a soft brush. For deeper cleaning, a cloth dampened with white vinegar, which dries quickly and aids in stain removal, can be used, or a manufacturer-recommended unsealed floor cleaner.
Delicate fabrics, including silk, suede, velour, and velvet, are highly sensitive to the high heat of steam cleaners and can suffer irreversible damage. While many steam cleaners come with attachments for cleaning upholstery and mattresses, caution is advised for these sensitive materials. Before using a steam cleaner on any fabric, loose dust and dirt should be vacuumed. For delicate fabrics, it is recommended to check care labels or manufacturer instructions. Safer alternatives include using a handheld clothes steamer for fragile items, hand washing, or using a cold or delicate cycle in a washing machine. Dry cleaning might also be a necessary option for some fabrics.
Finally, water-based painted surfaces, whether on walls or furniture, should not be steam cleaned. The heat from a steam cleaner will cause water-based paint to dry out, crack, or peel off. For cleaning water-based painted surfaces, a dry, clean cloth with a small amount of warm water is appropriate. It is advisable to test a small, inconspicuous area first to observe the paint's reaction before cleaning a larger section. If unsure, consulting the paint manufacturer for cleaning guidelines is recommended. Adhering to these precautions ensures the longevity and appearance of various household surfaces while utilizing steam cleaners for their intended applications.
