For over 50 years, these metrics have guided architectural design teams in quantifying acoustic levels. Early documents like HUD's 1967 guide and the Uniform Building Code (UBC) emphasized sound control, with UBC requiring a minimum STC and IIC rating of 50 (or 45 if field-tested). Higher ratings indicate better performance. The adoption of the International Building Code (IBC) in 1997 raised awareness of acoustical ratings, though minimum requirements remained consistent with UBC. Despite growing competition in the multifamily industry leading to upgrades in flooring and lighting as amenities, acoustical performance often received little attention. This oversight is problematic given that acoustics significantly influence vacancy rates and are a common source of litigation. These levels offer clearer targets for desired acoustical performance based on building type. For example, a luxury building or one with noise-sensitive occupants would aim for the 'preferred' level. A common design for multifamily projects, recommended by acoustical consultants, includes hard-surfaced flooring, at least 25 mm (1 in.) of gypsum concrete, a 6.4-mm (¼-in.) entangled mesh sound mat, a wood subfloor, wood floor trusses or joists, insulation, resilient channel, and a single layer of gypsum board. Architect Paul O’Reilly, founder of Archterra, designed and built Bush House as his family home in Margaret River, Western Australia. The 1,808-square-foot residence is situated within a clearing surrounded by jarrah bushland and eucalyptus trees on his family’s cattle farm. O’Reilly's design concept for Bush House was heavily influenced by his lifelong love of camping, particularly the simple shelter provided by a canvas tarpaulin over a four-wheel drive. This inspiration led to the primary design element of a large, single roof, offering protection from the sun, wind, and rain. The house takes cues from California’s iconic Case Study houses of the 1940s to 1960s. O’Reilly implemented a 12-foot structural grid, allowing for a prefabricated steel frame support structure to be erected rapidly. This steel structure, combined with the single-plane roof, created a protected environment that facilitated the subsequent infill timber framing, regardless of weather conditions. The roof plane ascends towards the north, incorporating cedar-framed clerestory windows that offer views of the sky and treetops, providing a warm and tactile contrast to the clear anodized sliding door frames. The floor plan of Bush House is simple and rectilinear. Living areas are located to the east, while sleeping quarters are positioned to the west. A change in floor level and a substantial rammed-earth wall delineate these shared and private zones. This rammed-earth wall extends from the interior to the outdoors, also serving to define the entry approach from the detached carport and workshop. The two guest bedrooms are oriented north to maximize winter sunlight, while the master bedroom faces southwest, capturing views of the sunset through the surrounding tree canopy. A unique feature is the southwest-facing bathroom, which includes a glass door that opens to the bushland, creating an outdoor shower experience. The property features two outdoor decks: one sheltered beneath the roof's overhang and another more exposed area for sun lounging or stargazing. Material selection prioritized durability and low maintenance, with raw galvanized steel, Zincalume metal for external finishes, and rammed earth used for the exterior, all requiring no ongoing upkeep. The interiors incorporate tactile, natural materials such as rammed earth and plywood, chosen to contrast with the more 'synthetic' elements like concrete floors, exposed galvanized steel structure, and white painted plasterboard walls. O'Reilly’s design philosophy for Bush House embraces a 'less is more' approach and the Japanese aesthetic of 'wabi-sabi,' valuing the imperfect and unfinished. ROOVICE has completed the Shirokanedai House project, a renovation of a 50-year-old wooden residence in Tokyo's Minato ward, Japan. The primary objective of this project was to upgrade the 1970s two-story house for enhanced earthquake resistance, establishing safety as the fundamental principle guiding all subsequent aesthetic and functional improvements. The renovation successfully integrates traditional Japanese architectural elements with contemporary design principles, aiming to improve the property's overall functionality, safety, and visual appeal for continued rental use. The decision to renovate rather than demolish was driven by the prohibitive costs associated with demolition in Japan and the property's sound structural condition. The ground floor underwent a significant transformation to create a more open and inviting living space. This involved the removal of existing dividing walls and ceiling boards, effectively merging the former kitchen with two tatami rooms into a single, expansive area. The previously dim, grayish walls were repainted in a crisp white, and new windows were installed to maximize natural light penetration, contributing to a brighter atmosphere. The traditional tatami floors were replaced with hemlock wood flooring, and the kotatsu stove pit was covered. The kitchen and corridor areas were updated with durable clinker tiles, and a custom-made kitchen counter was installed, adding a contemporary touch. A distinctive triangle-shaped built-in cupboard in the corridor wall was visually accentuated by a diagonal wall connecting it to the kitchen wall. A new glass door, designed to complement the cupboard's style, was also added, enhancing both functionality and aesthetic coherence. Further enhancements on the ground floor included the bathroom, which was reconfigured to accommodate a washing machine. The front room's flooring was updated with practical PVC sheeting. A new bathtub and white wall tiles were installed, while traditional Tamaishi tiles, reminiscent of the Shōwa era, were selected for the bathroom and toilet floors. The wooden steps connecting the living room to the garden were replaced with stone steps, fostering a more robust connection between the interior and exterior spaces. Upstairs, the renovation maintained a respectful link to the home’s traditional roots while introducing modern updates. The kitchenette in the corridor was removed, and the wall in this area was tiled with the same clinker tiles used on the ground floor, ensuring design consistency. New tatami mats were laid in the tatami rooms, and the shoji doors were refurbished, preserving their traditional character. The outer corridor’s flooring and windows were updated to align with the ground floor's design. All walls throughout the upper level were painted white, contributing to a cohesive and bright ambiance. In the third room on the second floor, old wood boards were replaced with new lauan wood ones, and a beige carpet was laid, offering a soft contrast to the wooden elements. The couple, dedicated climate activists, prioritized natural materials and a minimal carbon footprint. Their previous 6,000-square-foot home was deemed too large, leading them to opt for a smaller, more intimate space for their daughter, Sthuthi, and their Shitzu, Sky. Architects Aatira Zacharias and Bhyrav B.R. of 1LeapingFrog Studio, whose design philosophy aligns with the Shastrys' sustainable vision, were commissioned for the project. The building incorporates passive cooling mechanisms that effectively negate the need for air conditioning, even in Bengaluru's 40-degree Celsius heat, showcasing a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. The design approach was further shaped by the clients' support for local craftsmanship. Departing from contemporary trends of 'cement finishes' and 'oxide-feel' paints, the Shastrys sought authenticity.
