One Designer Says She's Been Using This Paint Finish for Over 40 Years: 'I Never Get Tired of It'

The selection of paint finish plays a crucial role in determining a wall's aesthetic and durability. While many focus on color, the finish significantly impacts the overall look and longevity of painted surfaces. Erika Woelfel, vice president of color services at Behr, emphasizes that choosing the correct finish is paramount, as it influences both appearance and resilience over time. High-gloss paints offer ease of cleaning and reflective qualities that can make smaller spaces appear larger, whereas matte finishes excel at concealing wall imperfections. However, for those seeking a balance of both beauty and practicality, interior designers frequently recommend eggshell paint. Eggshell paint is characterized as a versatile finish that occupies a middle ground between matte and glossy. Kara Childress, a Houston-based interior designer, describes it as the "Goldilocks of paints," offering an ideal balance. It effectively softens minor imperfections, is easy to wipe clean, and maintains its appearance well in areas subject to daily use. The sheen of a paint is determined by its pigment volume concentration (PVC), which represents the ratio of color to binders. Generally, a lower PVC results in a glossier paint. Eggshell paint, however, has a slightly higher PVC, positioning it as an excellent mid-range option. This composition yields a soft, velvety sheen that subtly reflects light, adding depth without appearing overly shiny, as noted by Woelfel. Caitlin Kah, another designer, states that she utilizes eggshell finishes in nearly all of her projects due to its subtle sheen, which imparts a sophisticated touch without excessive shine. The advantages of eggshell paint are numerous, appealing to those who find themselves undecided between matte and gloss finishes. Childress highlights its exceptional durability and superior cleanability compared to matte finishes, while also being more forgiving than high-gloss options. It adeptly conceals imperfections and possesses a subtle quality that does not overshadow the character of the home. Kah considers eggshell a timeless classic. However, she advises against using it in extremely high-traffic areas where walls might experience frequent contact, such as playrooms or back staircases where luggage could cause damage. For such environments, a high-gloss paint, known for its versatility and ease of cleaning, would be a more suitable choice. Eggshell paint is highly adaptable and can be used throughout a home. Woelfel suggests it is particularly well-suited for rooms that require more frequent cleaning, such as kitchens and bathrooms, due to its resistance to dirt and ease of maintenance. Bedrooms, dining rooms, and living rooms are also excellent candidates for eggshell finishes. Childress frequently uses eggshell paint for walls and trim, particularly in projects incorporating plaster elements. She finds that its soft, low sheen beautifully complements plaster, allowing the walls to become a focal point while the trim subtly recedes. By maintaining a monochromatic palette, the home’s architectural features are emphasized. When selecting eggshell paint colors, it's important to remember that each shade will appear differently depending on the finish. Designers often recommend classic hues. Childress favors Sherwin-Williams' Accessible Beige (SW 7036), noting its depth and softness in an eggshell finish, which beautifully reflects light. Kah prefers crisp whites like Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace (OC-65) and recommends Farrow & Ball's Pointing (No. 2003) for a warm neutral. Childress, with over forty years of experience, affirms the enduring appeal of eggshell finishes, describing them as understated, elegant, and capable of making a room feel both comfortably lived-in and thoughtfully refined. #EggshellPaint #PaintFinishes #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #DesignerTips #PaintColors #WallPaint #HomeImprovement #EggshellPaint #PaintFinishes #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #DesignerTips #PaintColors #WallPaint #HomeImprovement
