Modern Mixology Meets Ancestral Roots In This Mexican Cocktail Bar

Bekeb cocktail bar, situated within San Miguel de Allende's Live Aqua Urban Resort, is a 1,700-square-foot space designed by MAYE Estudio for acclaimed mixologist Fabiola Padilla. The design aims to blend modern mixology with deep-rooted heritage, drawing inspiration from the rugged spirit of Los Altos de Jalisco. Fabiola Padilla, recognized among the 50 Best in North America, sought to create an environment that honors her Mexican heritage, a vision shared by Maye Ruiz, founder of MAYE Estudio, whose own family history is intertwined with the ranchlands of the region. This shared background became the foundation for Bekeb's design, which reinterprets traditional ranch culture through contemporary textures, finishes, and motifs. The design of Bekeb Bar by MAYE Estudio is characterized by a sophisticated reinterpretation of Mexican cantina aesthetics, rooted in the heritage of Los Altos de Jalisco. The space incorporates artisanal collaborations, featuring warm Rosa Morada wood, plush cinnamon and deep-green velvet and chenille fabrics, and hair-on-hide leather from León. This leather, a nod to Ruiz’s hometown, wraps the bar and custom booths, accented by sleek stainless steel baseboards. Artist Rodrigo Méndez contributes to the theme by transforming traditional milk cans, symbolizing the region's dairy industry, into sculptural welcome statements placed on the bar top. Mexican workshop MARO provides handcrafted, three-dimensional ceramic tiles from Dolores Hidalgo, which adorn the walls of the bar, guest rooms, and bathrooms, bridging regional tradition with modern technology. The interior color palette, consisting of ochres, tobacco browns, and leathery cinnamons, evokes images of worn saddles and whiskey-aged wood, punctuated by vibrant accents of saturated blue and butter yellow. Monterrey-based artist Nef Espino's murals are a central feature, depicting surreal landscapes of agave fields, ranch life, and dreamscapes. These murals also subtly integrate Padilla’s past experiences as a bartender in New York, creating a visual narrative that transcends time and place. Maye Ruiz emphasizes that Bekeb’s design thrives on rich contrasts, where diverse elements coalesce into a harmonious and cohesive whole. The project was completed in a swift four months, resulting in a layered and immersive environment. Amber-tinted glassware catches the light, and the atmosphere evokes the highlands, complemented by the scents of citrus and herbs. Fabiola Padilla’s cocktail menu further enhances the experience by reimagining ancestral recipes with regional botanicals, perfectly aligning with the bar's evocative design. The murals serve as a focal point, intricately weaving panoramas of agave fields and ranch motifs into a setting that combines leather, steel, and textured tiles, presenting a refined fusion of heritage and modernity. Additional design elements include a lounge area with a rich mix of textures and tones, featuring plush green velvet chairs by Siteri, warm wood, and a sleek leather banquette. A curated palette of amber, yellow, and brown-tinted glass creates a warm glow over interior tables crafted from Rosa Morada wood with Corian tops, designed by MAYE Estudio. The bathroom features unique tiles that create an illusion of softness, inviting touch with their stone-like appearance. The terrace area is furnished with handwoven wicker lamps by Mestiz, which cast a warm sheen, alongside woven tule chairs by Sáasil, sofas by Los Patrones, and tables designed by MAYE Estudio, completing the bar’s overall design narrative. #BekebBar #MAYEEstudio #FabiolaPadilla #SanMiguelDeAllende #MexicanDesign #InteriorDesign #RanchHeritage #CocktailBar #ArtisanalCraftsmanship #BekebBar #MAYEEstudio #FabiolaPadilla #SanMiguelDeAllende #MexicanDesign #InteriorDesign #RanchHeritage #CocktailBar #ArtisanalCraftsmanship
