We’re Crushing on This Art Nouveau-Style Speakeasy
Raised by Wolves, a new speakeasy in La Jolla, California, offers an immersive Art Nouveau-style experience, blending a high-end bottle shop with a hidden bar. The venue, developed by co-founder Arsalun Tafazoli and designer Paul Basile, aims to transport guests to a different era, prioritizing escapism over a typical cocktail lounge atmosphere. The entrance is disguised within a boutique bottle shop featuring stained glass windows, vintage street lanterns, marble floors, and murals of the French countryside, selling craft liquors, cocktail books, and barware. The actual bar is revealed through a rotating fireplace.
Once inside, the 2,000-square-foot speakeasy is housed within a steel-and-stained-glass garden gazebo, evoking a 19th-century aesthetic. The interior is meticulously designed with nostalgic details, including a fiber optic ceiling that mimics a twinkling night sky, Victorian settees, antique books, and various treasures. A prominent feature is the massive marble-topped bar encircling a bubbling fountain, where skilled mixologists craft a range of drinks. The cocktail menu reinterprets vintage spirits and modern classics, offering options from unique, affordable concoctions like the $9 Painted Lady (vodka, lime, aloe liqueur, snap peas, and vermouth) to exclusive, high-end selections like a $790 Vintage Old-Fashioned made with 1960s Very Old Fitzgerald Kentucky Bourbon.
Guests interested in replicating their drinks at home can request recipes, with all necessary ingredients available for purchase in the adjacent bottle shop, which also features rare bottles, some priced as high as $18,000. This blend of a retail space and a hidden bar provides a comprehensive experience, allowing patrons to enjoy expertly crafted cocktails in a distinctive setting and then take a piece of that experience home. The design elements and meticulous attention to detail aim to create a cohesive and captivating environment that stands apart from the surrounding modern retail center, offering a journey back in time through its decor and ambiance.
