Joanna Gaines transforms a white box into a stylish his and hers office
Joanna Gaines, in her "Mini Reni" series, transformed two uninspired, all-white box rooms into distinctive and personalized home offices for a couple. The original space, a formal living room connected to a formal dining room, presented a blank canvas, divided by a pair of doors, and featured only concrete floors and white walls. The design challenge involved creating two separate office spaces that catered to the contrasting interests and styles of the couple: one masculine and moody, and the other feminine and French-inspired.
For the masculine office, Gaines focused on adding character and an aged elegance. She began by installing warm laminate floors and architectural details such as molding and a chair rail. The walls were then painted a deep navy and adorned with a coordinating Windsor Blue wallpaper from her collection with York. These elements combined to create a sophisticated and refined study. Despite the dominant masculine and moody theme, the space also incorporated softness and warmth, notably through a thoughtfully curated gallery wall and brass accents, such as a brass calendar and tray. Specific product recommendations included an equestrian study print and an antiqued brass banks vase, contributing to the vintage-inspired aesthetic. Additionally, practical yet stylish boucle ottomans were chosen for seating, acknowledging the limited space in the entry area.
The feminine office, designed with a "Happy French Girl" aesthetic, offered a stark contrast in palette while maintaining a connection through common colors, decor, and styling. The walls in this office were covered with French Linen Stripe wallpaper from Magnolia, and the ceiling was painted in Sunday Stroll from Magnolia. To elevate the existing hollow core door, applied molding was added, creating a more refined look. A patterned, textured rug was introduced to ground the space, bringing warmth and visual interest. Vintage-style furniture, including sweet, simple chairs, created a cozy corner for relaxation and connection. A personal shadow box, filled with meaningful trinkets and keepsakes, served as a central decorative element, reflecting the client's desire for a French-inspired space and adding a deeply personal touch. Recommended items for this office included an Olivia Table Lamp in Lake Blue for its whimsical, vintage charm, a Cordelia Marble Side Table designed for Magnolia, and a "Your Story" Brass Display Cabinet to house personal collections.
Across both offices, Gaines skillfully blended different styles by using rustic, vintage-inspired decor and a classic color palette. Her approach ensured that while the spaces were individually tailored to the occupants, they also maintained a cohesive aesthetic, preventing them from feeling disconnected despite their stylistic differences. The renovation demonstrates Gaines' ability to infuse personality and old-world charm into modern spaces while adhering to a budget and integrating the clients' individual preferences.
