Joanna Gaines’s New Library Radiates Old-World Charm
Joanna Gaines recently transformed an ordinary conference room at the Magnolia office in Waco, Texas, into a library with an old-world aesthetic. The renovation focused on creating a space conducive to creativity and discussion, moving away from the previous bland environment. The central element of this transformation is the rich green color scheme, which Gaines noted is similar to Magnolia's Beautiful Acres paint. She emphasized how a simple can of paint can dramatically alter a room's mood.
Beyond the color, Gaines incorporated significant architectural details to enhance the room's character. She replaced standard ceiling tiles with ornate tin squares, adding a touch of vintage elegance. Thick crown and base moldings were also installed, contributing to the historical feel of the space. Gaines’s design philosophy for this project was to maintain a cohesive look, ensuring that all these detailed elements, including the custom trim, ceiling, and built-in bookshelf, were painted in the same deep forest green. This approach aimed to highlight the texture of each material subtly yet effectively, preventing any visual breaks in the intricate design.
To achieve depth and variation within the monochromatic scheme, Gaines utilized two different finishes for the same paint color. A gloss finish was applied to the custom trim and ceiling, providing a reflective quality and accentuating these features. In contrast, the walls received a satin finish, which offers a softer, more muted appearance. This subtle distinction in finish adds sophistication and visual interest without disrupting the unified color palette.
The newly designed library also features practical and inviting elements such as a cozy reading nook and a pink velvet sofa, which introduce comfort and a hint of unexpected color, softening the rich green tones. Gaines highlighted the importance of sampling paint colors before committing to a full application, as lighting conditions can significantly alter how a color appears in a space. This advice is particularly relevant for dark hues like the olive tone chosen for the library.
The overall renovation demonstrates how strategic use of color, texture, and architectural details can profoundly impact a room's atmosphere, transforming a functional but uninspiring space into an inviting and inspiring environment. The project showcases Gaines's signature style, blending rustic charm with refined elegance, and provides an example of how to create a workspace that encourages creativity and comfort through thoughtful design choices.
