I Thought Accent Walls Were "So Over" Until I Saw This
Accent walls, and indoor murals in particular, have been subject to shifting design trends over the years. While often associated with the 2010s, this design element is not entirely obsolete. Contemporary iterations move beyond bold geometric murals to embrace more subtle styles, such as limewash, verdure wallpaper, and even 'wall drapery.'
There remains a strong case for the traditional accent wall, as articulated by Apartment Therapy's editor-in-chief, Charli Penn. Penn emphasizes that a single, intentional design moment can profoundly alter a space's mood. She argues that in smaller or awkwardly shaped rooms, an accent wall is not outdated but rather a decisive design choice. This perspective is reinforced by an Instagram post showcasing a simple yet transformative approach to the wall mural: the monochromatic accent wall mural, which achieves a subtle yet striking visual impact through variations in paint sheen.
The technique involves utilizing the same paint color but in different finishes to create a subdued accent wall mural. Artist Becka Matthews Hickerson has popularized this method, using matte and semigloss combinations of the same color. For instance, she demonstrated this with Sherwin-Williams’ Jasper (SW 6126) green, applied in both matte and semigloss finishes to create a leafy mural. Hickerson notes that this approach adds significant depth and visual interest to a room without overwhelming it.
The beauty of this monochromatic technique lies in its subtlety; from certain angles, the wall may appear as a solid accent color, but when light interacts with it correctly, an intricate pattern is revealed. This method results in a more sophisticated and elevated aesthetic compared to earlier, bolder indoor murals. While previous trends favored bright, colorful murals that served as expressive backdrops, current home decor trends lean towards richer, more eclectic, and refined styles. This evolution naturally extends to accent walls.
New variations like the monochromatic mural, wall drapery, trompe-l’œil moldings, and sophisticated wallpaper patterns are revitalizing the accent wall concept. These contemporary approaches help move beyond the more overt "millennial photo-op aesthetic" that characterized earlier trends. This evolution suggests a future for accent walls that is both refined and innovative, promising visually engaging and sophisticated design solutions for modern interiors.
