How to ditch the bathroom clutter and restore its zen-like serenity
A recent study conducted by home improvement retailer B&Q reveals that UK bathrooms are experiencing a significant increase in product accumulation, with approximately 140 million more products being stored compared to five years ago. This surge is attributed to a boom in grooming trends and the wide variety of products available. The research indicates that 55% of individuals possess multiple units of the same product, while a substantial 68% are actively seeking innovative storage solutions to optimize their bathroom space.
Professional organizer Vicky Silverthorn offers practical advice on decluttering bathroom cabinets and maintaining a serene environment. Her first tip emphasizes utilizing existing storage efficiently and keeping extra items out of sight, suggesting that an excess of products could indicate unnecessary purchases. For effective decluttering, Silverthorn recommends preparing a clear workspace, a rubbish bag, a recycling bag, and cleaning cloths to ensure thorough organization and sanitization before returning items.
Strategic positioning of items is crucial, according to Silverthorn. Frequently used products should be placed in easily accessible areas, while spare items can be stored away. She also advises against hoarding excessive quantities of the same product, as this leads to inefficient use of valuable storage space. Instead, individuals should designate a specific area for spare products and toiletries, recommending storage baskets that complement the bathroom's aesthetic. An example given is the Form Natural Water Hyacinth & Seagrass baskets from B&Q, which are neutral and come in a set of three.
Additionally, Silverthorn provides guidance on practical thinking and responsible consumption. She suggests placing newer items at the back of cupboards to ensure older products are used first, thereby minimizing waste. She stresses the importance of using up existing products before buying new ones and checking spare supplies before shopping to avoid impulse purchases. This approach not only prevents clutter but also fosters a more positive feeling about consumption. Lastly, she highlights the importance of proper storage for product longevity, advising to keep toiletries and beauty products out of direct sunlight. Expired products should be discarded, as their effectiveness diminishes over time, presenting a prime opportunity for decluttering.
