How To Clean Baseboards, According To An Expert

Baseboards often go unnoticed until they accumulate a significant amount of dirt and grime, a common oversight for many homeowners. Deep cleaning baseboards is not required frequently, but when it is, proper techniques ensure lasting cleanliness. Taylor Matthews, owner of Sparkling Queens in Savannah, Georgia, provides comprehensive guidance on deep cleaning baseboards, detailing frequency, necessary supplies, and specific methods for different types of finishes. Deep cleaning baseboards is recommended every six months, although this can vary based on lifestyle factors such as the presence of pets and the type of flooring. Homes with carpets tend to accumulate more dirt and dander on baseboards due to their ability to trap these particles, which can then be transferred to the baseboards during vacuuming or daily activities. Therefore, homes with carpets or pets might require more frequent attention. Before initiating the cleaning process, it is crucial to consider the materials and finishes of the baseboards. Matthews advises against using harsh chemicals like bleach or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the baseboards. Additionally, inspecting the surface texture is important; unfinished wood or roughly painted baseboards can shed fibers from cleaning cloths, potentially worsening their appearance. This pre-assessment helps in selecting appropriate cleaning tools and solutions. For effective cleaning, several essential items are needed: a vacuum cleaner or duster for initial dust removal, clean microfiber cloths for wiping, a bucket for mixing solutions, and dish soap. For stained wood baseboards, Murphy's Oil or another wood cleaning oil is also recommended to enhance their shine and protect the wood. The cleaning method varies depending on whether the baseboards are painted or made of stained wood. For painted baseboards, the first step involves dry dusting to remove loose dirt and debris. This can be done with a microfiber cloth, a Swiffer duster, a hard broom, or a vacuum cleaner attachment. Following dusting, a solution of warm water and dish soap is prepared in a bucket. A clean microfiber cloth is then dipped into this solution, thoroughly wrung out to prevent excess moisture, and used to wipe down the baseboards in small sections, moving from left to right around the room. For stained wood baseboards, the process begins similarly with dusting using a dry microfiber cloth, optionally after using a vacuum cleaner to remove larger particles. After dusting, Murphy's Oil or a suitable wood cleaning oil is applied to restore shine and nourish the wood. Subsequently, a mixture of warm water and dish soap is prepared. A clean microfiber cloth is dampened with this solution, wrung out well, and used to wipe the baseboards in small, manageable sections. It is particularly important to avoid over-wetting stained wood baseboards because unpainted wood is porous and can absorb excessive moisture, potentially causing damage. To maintain cleaner baseboards for longer periods and reduce the frequency of deep cleaning, Matthews suggests regular dusting. Additionally, areas prone to spills and stickiness, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and around pet food and water bowls, should receive prompt attention. Wiping up spills immediately prevents them from drying and becoming stubborn stains, contributing to the overall cleanliness and appearance of the baseboards. #BaseboardCleaning #HomeMaintenance #CleaningTips #Housekeeping #InteriorCleaning #WoodCare #PaintedSurfaces #HomeCare #BaseboardCleaning #HomeMaintenance #CleaningTips #Housekeeping #InteriorCleaning #WoodCare #PaintedSurfaces #HomeCare
