How One NYC Designer Turned a White-Box Apartment Into a Warm, Storage-Filled Home

This article showcases the interior design work of Hilary Matt in a 4,000-square-foot condo on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The residence, a new build with 5.5 bedrooms, presented Matt with a blank canvas, allowing for complete creative freedom without structural limitations or existing furniture to integrate. Her primary objective was to infuse the new space with a lived-in feel for the family. A key strategy involved incorporating extensive custom built-ins throughout various rooms to address storage needs, a common requirement in modern urban living. Additionally, Matt augmented the condominium's lighting by installing additional fixtures, recognizing that new condos often lack sufficient ambient illumination, and relying solely on floor and table lamps would not suffice. The project's execution during the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a resourceful approach to furniture sourcing. Matt utilized in-stock pieces from mainstream brands, creating a diverse and accessible aesthetic. This decision also strategically allocated a larger portion of the clients' budget towards bespoke built-ins and high-quality construction work, emphasizing personalized functionality and long-term value. The design narrative unfolds room by room, highlighting specific choices and their impact on the overall ambiance and practicality of the home. In the living room, Matt fulfilled a long-held desire to feature a Desede sofa, complemented by Knoll chairs and a Kelly Wearstler console, indicating a blend of iconic and contemporary design elements. The dining room section of the living area features a custom dining table with a Corteccio marble slab from Bas Stone, paired with a striking chandelier from Avram Rusu Studio, suggesting a focus on unique materials and statement lighting. A breakfast nook is characterized by a custom wavy-edged banquette that provides a visual contrast against the white walls, creating a cozy and inviting space. The den is designed for maximum comfort, featuring a custom sofa and ottoman tailored for relaxation and practicality. The primary bedroom maintains a neutral color palette, enlivened by a variety of textures, along with pendants from Trueing Studio, an Anna Karlin light fixture, and a rug from The Rug Company, demonstrating careful consideration for tactile and visual depth. The son's room embraces a "funky and cool" aesthetic, with a light fixture from Trueing Studio, lamps from Entler Studio, and nightstands from Lawson Fenning, reflecting a youthful yet stylish sensibility. The nursery incorporates practical custom built-ins for toy and clothes storage, featuring wallpaper by Brett Designs and window coverings by Kravet, combining functionality with playful design. Finally, the daughter's room strikes a balance between girlish charm and sophistication, with a custom bed upholstered in Liberty fabric and wall covering by Phillip Jeffries, aiming for a sweet yet mature atmosphere. #InteriorDesign #NYCInterior #LuxuryApartment #CustomBuiltIns #StorageSolutions #HilaryMatt #HomeDecor #ContemporaryDesign #InteriorDesign #NYCInterior #LuxuryApartment #CustomBuiltIns #StorageSolutions #HilaryMatt #HomeDecor #ContemporaryDesign
