This Designer Cleverly Transformed an Eyesore Radiator Into Storage

Interior designer Beata Heuman, based in London, faced a common design challenge in her dining room: two bulky radiators that disrupted the aesthetic. Rather than accepting them as unavoidable eyesores or opting for standard, often unappealing, radiator covers, Heuman envisioned a creative and functional solution. Her approach involved transforming these heating units into decorative features that also provided storage, moving beyond mere concealment to integrate them seamlessly into the room's design. Heuman's innovative idea was to design a scalloped shelf that was sufficiently long and deep to completely cover the tops of the radiators. This design not only hid the utilitarian aspects of the radiators but also converted them into mini console tables. These new surfaces became ideal for displaying decorative items such as books and plants, thereby adding to the room's character rather than detracting from it. The bespoke nature of the solution allowed for a custom fit and a visually appealing outcome. To bring her vision to life, Heuman collaborated with a skilled craftsman. She provided detailed sketches from which the craftsman constructed the wooden shelf tops. This professional execution was crucial, as precision was necessary to ensure the shelves were stable and functional, preventing items placed on them from sliding off. While the article notes that DIY enthusiasts might consider tackling the painting stage themselves, the structural construction is best left to experienced professionals to guarantee quality and safety. Following the installation of these custom radiator covers, Heuman focused on styling them effectively. She shared practical advice for decorating these new surfaces, emphasizing the importance of choosing appropriate items. For instance, she cautioned against using candles due to the heat generated by the radiators, which could cause them to melt. When it came to plants, Heuman advised against heat-intolerant species, citing personal experience with plants that didn't thrive in such conditions. Instead, she recommended resilient options like aloe, ponytail palms, and various succulents, which are known to tolerate warmth. The vignettes were further enhanced with carefully selected accessories, including matching statement mirrors. Heuman’s own choice, a quirky egret mirror by Gail Dooley for Victoria Stainow, introduced a playful element to the space. The overall design was completed with whimsical wallpaper, contributing to a cohesive and stylish dining room. The comprehensive transformation successfully integrated the radiators into the room’s decor, making them indistinguishable as former eyesores and instead presenting them as intentional, attractive, and functional design elements. #RadiatorCover #HomeOrganization #InteriorDesign #BeataHeuman #CustomFurniture #DiningRoomDesign #SpaceSaving #DecorativeFeatures #HomeDecor #RadiatorCover #HomeOrganization #InteriorDesign #BeataHeuman #CustomFurniture #DiningRoomDesign #SpaceSaving #DecorativeFeatures #HomeDecor
