How a Sleeping Nook Became a Magical Forest Canopy Bed
Fashion creative Deborah Brett embarked on a whimsical bedroom makeover for her 9-year-old daughter, Hermione, inspired by the impending arrival of her third child. The goal was to transform a small sleeping nook into a magical, forest-like canopy bed, allowing Hermione to transition from a nursery into a special space she could grow into. Brett, a self-described naturephile whose home already featured botanical prints and lush motifs, envisioned a canopy with homemade tree trunks and hand-painted silk leaves overhead, creating the illusion of sleeping under trees. This project was conceived during her third trimester, necessitating assistance with the construction.
To bring her vision to life, Brett enlisted the help of a set designer friend, and together they completed the entire project over a single weekend. The main tree trunks, branches, and roots were crafted using polystyrene boards rolled into cylinders and affixed to the walls, designed to appear as if growing directly from the floor. Hessian sack cloth, dipped in plaster of Paris, was draped over these forms to unify their shapes, blend them seamlessly with the wall, and create a textured, bark-like finish. For the smaller branches, thick ropes were anchored to the ceiling, looped into holes in the "trunks," and similarly covered with the hessian cloth and plaster mixture.
After the plaster dried, Brett meticulously painted store-bought silk leaves in autumnal shades to enhance the enchanting forest atmosphere. The bark sections of the constructed trees were painted in shades of gray and brown. Small holes were then drilled into the branches to allow for the attachment of each individual leaf. To further enrich the nature scene, tiny decorative birds and wooden ladybugs were secured onto the leaves. The final, magical touch was the addition of a string of fairy lights woven among the branches, creating the effect of Hermione sleeping "under the stars."
This DIY project showcases a creative and personalized approach to bedroom design, turning a functional sleeping area into an imaginative escape. It highlights how a focused, weekend-long effort, coupled with creative collaboration, can yield a unique and cherished space for a child. The use of readily available materials like polystyrene, hessian cloth, plaster of Paris, and silk leaves demonstrates that a captivating design can be achieved through clever execution and artistic flair, rather than extensive renovation or high-cost elements. The project successfully blends practical needs with imaginative design, reflecting Brett's personal style and her desire to create a nurturing and inspiring environment for her daughter.
