This Sleepover-Ready Canopy Bed Converts Into a Fort
Oeuf, a design studio based in Brooklyn with French influences, has launched a new furniture piece called the Perch Nest. This piece is a highly anticipated addition to their collection, following a six-year hiatus in new furniture drops. Known for its kid-friendly designs, Oeuf has previously created popular items such as a convertible crib and a bear-shaped play chair, which have been featured in various celebrity and designer homes.
The Perch Nest is an evolution of Oeuf's existing Perch bunk bed, designed in response to parental feedback requesting a shorter alternative. While the original Perch bunk bed was already considered low compared to other market options, cofounders Sophie Demenge and Michael Ryan aimed to create a product that offered children more autonomy over their personal space. The goal was to design a piece that functions not just as a bed but also as a versatile play area, empowering children with choices in their daily environment.
The unique design of the Perch Nest allows it to transform, serving various functions as a child grows from toddler to tween years. When oriented right-side up, it acts as a lofted bed suitable for children aged six and older. In this configuration, standing just over four feet tall, it can be combined with a matching trundle bed to accommodate sleepovers or provide additional storage space for toys underneath. A notable benefit of its lower height is the ease with which parents can interact with their children, such as kissing them goodnight, without the need for a ladder.
Alternatively, when flipped over, the Perch Nest converts into a low-profile canopy bed. This setup is also compatible with Oeuf's Perch pull-out trundle. While the main bed can accommodate any twin mattress up to eight inches deep, the trundle requires a custom-made mattress available from Oeuf. The inherent versatility of the Perch Nest ensures that all its configurations are suitable for hosting sleepovers, making it a practical choice for growing families.
Consistent with Oeuf's commitment to quality and sustainability, the Perch Nest is manufactured by artisans in Latvia using FSC-certified, responsibly harvested wood. The materials used are Greenguard Gold–certified, ensuring they meet rigorous chemical emissions standards, contributing to healthier indoor air quality. Further enhancing its functionality and aesthetic, Demenge and Ryan plan to introduce customizable linen curtains later in the summer, which will attach to a built-in cable on the bed frame. In the interim, blankets, sheets, and pillowcases can be used to create a cozy, fort-like atmosphere. Demenge encourages an imaginative approach to styling the bed, viewing it as a blank canvas where children are given the freedom to personalize their space and unleash their creativity.
