A Ralph Lauren Canopy Transformed a Basic Bed Frame in This Cozy Bedroom Makeover
Hannah Martin-O’Brien undertook a bedroom makeover to revitalize an existing bed frame in her guest bedroom, aiming to create a cozy and personalized space without purchasing new furniture. The project, focused on her mother-in-law's room, emphasized fabric elements to add drama and height to the bed. The initial phase of the renovation involved extensive preparation, including stripping lead paint from the old doors and painting the entire room. Hannah and her husband, Harrison, chose Little Greene’s Ashes of Roses for the walls, noting that the room’s southern exposure beautifully brought out the muted soft red-pink tones of the paint. For the built-in drawers and trim, they opted for Little Greene’s Silent White – Mid, creating a harmonious color palette.
Beyond painting, Hannah enhanced the room's character by upgrading the windows. She installed flexible PVC trim with an adhesive back to create a 'cottage-worthy' aesthetic, meticulously cutting the molding at a 45-degree angle with a utility knife. Complementing this, she added relaxed Roman shades to the windows, contributing to the room's soft and inviting atmosphere. The centerpiece of the bedroom transformation was a DIY fabric canopy behind the bed. Hannah sourced secondhand Ralph Lauren drapes from eBay, using them to frame the bed and establish the overall mood and color scheme for the entire project. This fabric choice became a foundational element for her design decisions.
Throughout the room, Hannah skillfully mixed and matched various patterned fabrics. This included new striped lampshades, floral bedding, and a blue floral chair cover that she made herself, demonstrating her creativity and DIY approach. A patterned rug from Etsy further added to the eclectic yet cohesive design. The room also features several vintage finds, which contribute to its unique charm. Hannah located a bamboo tortoise shell étagère, which she used to display books and mementos in a corner. The bedside lamps were discovered on Facebook Marketplace, while a vanity, originally her great-grandmother's sewing machine, was repurposed by adding an antique mirror, transforming it into a cherished heirloom piece.
The culmination of these efforts resulted in a quaint, cottage-style setup that perfectly complements the 1804 home's historical character. Hannah’s approach highlights how thoughtful DIY projects, careful paint choices, and the incorporation of vintage items can transform a basic space into a highly personalized and inviting environment without the need for significant new furniture investments. The makeover demonstrates a blend of practicality, aesthetic vision, and a deep appreciation for unique, storied pieces, successfully creating a cozy and dramatic bedroom with a distinct vintage and eclectic style.
