Home On The Ranch: Entry Library & Mudroom
This article details the initial phases of the 'Home On The Ranch' project, a significant design endeavor featured on the Netflix show 'Dream Home Makeover.' Situated on a expansive farmland property boasting mountain views, the residence is designed to accommodate multiple generations of family and friends. The overall design emphasizes a balance between timeless elegance and practical, livable materials, with the unexpected addition of a regulation-sized basketball court illustrating a blend of sophistication and recreational elements. The project involved collaboration with Hebdon Studios and Everlast Custom Homes to realize the client's vision.
The exterior of the home immediately conveys its design philosophy through a thoughtful combination of time-honored elements and diverse materials. Redbrick, white shiplap, and natural wood finishes create a dynamic yet cohesive facade. These materials contribute to a sense of depth and a streamlined aesthetic, extending to the stained wood doors that mark the primary entrance. This initial impression sets the tone for the interior design, which consistently integrates classic and modern sensibilities.
Upon entering, a grand two-story-high vaulted entryway greets visitors. This space features stained wood rafters and intricate wall paneling that seamlessly extends into other areas of the home. The entryway is furnished with carefully selected pieces, including a vintage console, a traditional Windsor chair, and a curved settee, which collectively achieve an elevated yet inviting atmosphere. The paint scheme in this area uses Benjamin Moore's Swiss Coffee at 75% strength, applied in different finishes (Eggshell for walls, Satin for trim, and Flat for the ceiling) to add subtle variations and dimension.
Adjacent to the entryway, a pair of natural wood doors leads into the family library. This dedicated space serves multiple functions, including a study area, a music room, and storage for an extensive book collection. The library's design incorporates herringbone floors and ceiling beams, contributing to its classic charm. A large central table provides ample workspace, complemented by a rust-colored velvet sofa that adds a touch of warmth and luxury. A rolling ladder, a quintessential library feature, enhances both aesthetics and functionality. A notable personal touch is the client's grandmother's piano, which was repainted in Benjamin Moore's Grey Owl, revitalizing it for the space. The built-in shelves are thoughtfully styled with a mix of old and new decorative objects, further personalizing the room. Task lighting integrated into the built-ins illuminates the displayed items, enhancing the character of the space.
Beyond the library, a hallway leads to the mudroom, a highly functional area designed for organization and convenience. The mudroom features meticulously crafted cabinetry that provides locker-style storage, ensuring that personal items are neatly tucked away. A designated landing zone is incorporated for everyday essentials like cellphones and keys. A custom bench with a leather cushion offers comfortable seating and contributes to the room's tailored look. The flooring in the mudroom consists of Bleu Chinois Cobblestone from Exquisite Surfaces, adding a distinctive and durable element to this high-traffic area. The article also provides a practical tip for interior design, advising to order a single piece of hardware for significant areas to visualize the impact before committing to a larger purchase.
Finally, the project includes a court area, which, while briefly mentioned, underscores the home's comprehensive design, catering to both aesthetic appeal and practical living requirements. The overall design narrative for this project emphasizes creating spaces that are both beautiful and functional, capable of hosting and serving a family for many years.
